Chaney, Tighe hit home runs

MUNCIE — A former conference rival couldn’t do much to slow down the Patriots.
Twelve players each had at least one hit as the Jay County High School softball team clobbered the host Muncie Southside Rebels 23-2 in five innings.
Nikka Chaney and Chelsea Tighe each hit home runs in the game for the Patriots (5-2), who scored four times in the first inning to take control against their former Olympic Athletic Conference foes.
Chaney scored four times, and Katie Aker finished with four runs and three RBIs. Catherine Dunn and Tighe had three hits apiece, and Lexie Gierhart and Abbey Vance drove in three runs apiece.
Vance picked up her first victory of the year, striking out six batters in five innings. She gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk.

Girls track dominates
Maria Murphy, Katie Snyder and Malarie Houck each won two events Thursday, and Jay County swept the relays in a double victory.
The Patriot girls, who are now 7-0, scored 105.5 points to crush visiting Yorktown (34) and Delta (20.5). Delta won the boys competition with 63 points with Jay County (49) in second place and Yorktown (44) third.
Murphy turned in the best throw of her career by a half-inch to win the discus at 127 feet, 3 inches, and was also first in the shot put at 37 feet, 11 inches. Snyder won the 100-meter dash in 12.74 seconds and the 200 dash in 26.87, and Houck was first in the 100 and 300 hurdles in times of 16.65 and 49.27 respectively.
Dylan Cope was the lone double winner for the boys team (5-2), taking the 800 run in 2 minutes, 8 seconds, and the 1,600 run in 4:42.

Baseball loses first
SELMA — The undefeated run came to an end Thursday as the Patriots suffered their first loss of the season, 10-0 in six innings to the host Wapahani Raiders.
Jay County (5-1) went hitless in the defeat while the Raiders scored three runs in the third inning, five in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Ty Huntsman dropped to 2-1 as he took the loss, giving up eight runs — four earned — on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five batters.
Devin Conatser allowed two runs in the final third of an inning in the loss.
The junior varsity team (1-4) got a single and an RBI from Chaz Carroll, but lost 12-2 in five innings to host Bellmont.

Tennis slips to 1-3
Jay County dropped its third straight match since topping Blackford in the season opener, falling 4-1 Thursday to the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
Jessica Ooten was the lone winner for the Patriots for the third straight match. She improved to 4-0 on the season at No. 2 singles, defeating Amanda Stone 6-0, 6-1.
JCHS won the first set in three other matches, but ended up dropping them all in three sets. Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Hunter Cunningham and Sierra Steffen at No. 2 doubles, Melinda Penrod lost 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 to Allison Williams at No. 3 singles and Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben dropped a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 decision to Hanna Gilliam and Gina Eisenhut at No. 1 doubles.
Alyssa Rigby suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 1 singles.
The Patriots won the junior varsity match 7-3 led by Avery Loyd’s 8-1 victory over Emma Thompson at No. 2 singles.[[In-content Ad]]
