ALEXANDRIA - The Jay County High School cheerleading squad had a good showing in its first competition this summer.

The Patriot varsity cheerleaders finished second in the large varsity division at the Madison County Fair Friday night. Anderson Highland finished first.

Members of the squad are senior Kelsey Bone, juniors Erika Hunt, Megan Adams, Amanda Pinkerton and Lexie Easton and sophomores Gabi Stout, Dannie Grant, Jessica Beaty, Stephy Morgan and Jenny Buckland.

Rockets are runners-up

DANVILLE - The Portland Rockets fell just short of the Midwest Prospects League title Sunday, dropping the championship game 3-2 to U.S. Athletic Red in eight innings.

With Saturday's games postponed because of rain, Portland played three times Sunday.

The Rockets (22-10) dropped their opener 4-1 after starter Eric Van Matre gave up three runs to U.S. Athletic Red in the opening inning. They got their only run on a Phil Bruns single to score Nick Millspaugh, and Bruns and Devin Lee each totaled two hits.

Matt Ousley got Portland back on track, tossing a four-hit shutout in game two for a 6-0 win over the Midwest prospects. Bruns added three more hits, and Adam Childs had a pair of RBIs.

Then the Rockets fell just short in their championship rematch against U.S. Athletic Red as Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters took the loss in extra innings. Childs and Derek Lehrman each had a pair of hits.

J-R loses final pair

MUNCIE - There was no magic for the Jay-Randolph American Legion Baseball Team Monday as it ended a tough season with a pair of losses in the Muncie sectional.

J-R, which finished the year at 3-19, lost 13-0 to Seymour and 8-7 against Richmond Sunday.

Jay County High School graduate Josh Atkinson took the opening loss as Seymour tagged him for five runs in the second inning and seven in the fifth. He gave up 13 runs in all - eight earned - on 10 hits.

Justin Schwieterman had the only Jay-Randolph hit in the defeat.

In game two J-R stuck with Richmond, but fell one run short of forcing extra innings. Six of the eight runs scored against Cory Friend were unearned.

Schwieterman and George Myers paced the team with two hits and one run apiece. From the Jay County contingent Cory Locke and Andy Hughes each had a hit, and Tony McCowan scored a run.[[In-content Ad]]
