Chief seventh graders stay perfect (12/14/07)

PONETO - The Chiefs led by just a single point after the first quarter. Then they posted a 20-3 advantage over the second and third.

East Jay Middle School's seventh grade boys basketball team blasted the Southern Wells Raiders after the first period Thursday for a 43-16 victory. The eighth grade team took a 38-31 victory.

The Chief seventh graders pulled away from Southern Wells, including a 12-0 third quarter, to improve to 7-0 on the year. They gave up just seven points in the final three quarters after allowing nine in the first.

Cade Price led East Jay with 11 points, and Kegan Comer joined him in double figures with 10. Skyler Prescott scored seven points, and Brock McFarland added six.

The EJMS eighth grade team improved to 6-1 behind 14 points by Austin Cowan. Andy Haffner added eight points, and Jordan McBride scored six.

Tribe struggles continue

FORT RECOVERY - Both Fort Recovery Middle School boys basketball teams fell to the Minster Wildcats Thursday, dropping to a combined 1-9 on the season. The seventh grade team fell 37-29, and the eighth graders lost 58-33.

The Indian seventh graders (1-4) led by three after the first quarter and trailed by just one at the half before getting outscored 11-2 in the third period. Trent Kaiser scored 13 points for Fort Recovery, and Keith Fortkamp added seven.

Jacob Whitacre had 11 points for the eighth grade team, which dropped to 0-5. Jared Kahlig scored nine points, and Jason Pottkotter added eight.

JC freshmen boys fall

MUNCIE - Jay County High School's freshman boys basketball team trailed at the end of every quarter Thursday in a 30-25 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.

Drew Houck scored 10 points to lead the Patriots, who managed just two points in the first quarter. Zach Cash had six points, and Garrett Krieg added five.

Stars drop pair

The South Adams seventh grade boys basketball team lost twice at home this week, 38-22 Thursday to Bellmont and 43-15 Monday against Leo.

Blake Fox was the top scorer Thursday against Bellmont with 12 points. Evan Liechty finished with six points.

Chase Mosser had six points versus Leo.

Eagles drop pair

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's girls basketball teams struggled Thursday in a pair of losses to Winchester Driver. The eighth graders lost 32-9, and the seventh grade team fell 42-13.

The Eagle eighth grade squad (2-4) went scoreless in the first quarter and trailed by 15 at the half. Megan Sawyer scored five points, and Patricia McEwen and Shannon Springer added two apiece.

West Jay's seventh graders (2-4) got outscored 26-4 in the second half. Shelby Shirk totaled eight points, and Megan Price added a 3-pointer.[[In-content Ad]]
