A tie looked eminent. But a big penalty followed by a big play changed the script.
East Jay’s seventh grade football team got a 56-yard touchdown pass from Brendan Reed to Aaron Emerick with just 1:26 remaining as it took an 8-0 victory over the Muncie Wilson Panthers Wednesday.
The eighth grade team needed no such late heroics as it drubbed Wilson 32-0.
In the seventh grade game East Jay punted with 2:22 remaining, hoping the defense could hold. However, Wilson was called for roughing the kicker and the Chiefs took advantage of their new life.
After moving the ball to their own 44-yard line, Reed dropped back to pass and found Emerick open near the left sideline. Emerick hauled in the ball and outran Steve Hinds and Dylan Craver to the end zone for the winning score. Emerick also ran in the 2-point conversion.
The touchdown pass accounted for most of the East Jay offense. Reed had just one other completion for one yard, and Ike Bruggeman picked up 25 rushing yards.
D.J. Teeple racked up 12 tackles before leaving with an injury in the second half.
East Jay’s eighth graders dominated from the get-go, with Adam Coats scoring on a 21-yard run in the first quarter. Ben Vance added a 41-yard scoring run in the second period, and the Chiefs worked the two-minute drill to perfection to get a 4-yard touchdown run from Nick Stephen with four seconds left in the opening half.
Stephen added a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Vance finished with 80 yards on seven carries, and Adam Coats picked up 61 yards on five carries.
Both of Alex Langenkamp’s completions came on the final drive of the first half as he tossed for 69 yards. Vance caught one for 48 yards, and Scott Houston grabbed the other for 21 yards.
Michael Stephen notched seven tackles, and the Chiefs forced five turnovers.[[In-content Ad]]
