Chiefs take battle of Jay Co. (01/28/2009)

The East Jay Middle School boys basketball teams fought off their in-county rivals Tuesday night. The eighth grade Chiefs defeated visiting West Jay 44-28 while the seventh graders beat the Eagles 30-24.

Cade Price scored 18 points to power the EJMS eighth graders, who built a 17-point lead in the first quarter. Brock McFarland and Kegan Comer added eight points apiece.

West Jay outscored the Chiefs over the course of the final three periods, but could not mount a comeback. Tyler Back led the Eagles with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Jason Farmer added seven points.

Jacob Schlosser scored 12 points to lead the East Jay seventh grade team, which was up 16-7 at the half. Zane Shreve added 10 points.

EJ girls stay perfect

Snow couldn't slow the East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team, which stayed perfect on the year Tuesday with a 39-11 destruction of visiting Hartford City. The seventh grade Chiefs won 39-21.

Rachelle Jackson and Makayla Jobe each had 10 points for the eighth grade Chiefs, who are now 12-0. Gabi Cross and Kaitlin Petro added five points apiece.

Alex Loy and Kaitlin Petro each finished with seven points for the seventh grade team (8-2). Mikayla Gross followed with six points.
