Chiefs take relays (05/10/04)

The East Jay track teams defended their home turf well, winning as the hosts of the East Jay Relays Saturday.

The boys team racked up a huge total, posting 208.5 points in the victory. The Chief girls scored 153 points in its win.

South Adams was second on the boys side in the five-team event with 174.5 points, and West Jay was fourth with 103. The Starfire girls were also second with 130 points, and West Jay was fourth with 72.

Brad Tipton posted the lone individual win for East Jay’s boys, taking the shot put at 37 feet, 10 3/4 inches. All of the other wins for the Chiefs came in relays.

The seventh graders aided the effort with Lance Franklin, Dexter Shreve, Nathan Stephens and Jason Rosenbeck teaming to take the 4x100-meter seventh grade relay in 53.55 seconds. The same group won the 4x200-meter seventh grade relay in 1-minute, 54.99 seconds.

Franklin and Rosenbeck went on to join Clint Muhlenkamp and Cody Sutton to take first in the 1,200-meter sprint medley in 3:02. Franklin also teamed with Sutton, Muhlenkamp and Edwin Clott in winning the 4x400-meter relay in 4:04.08.

The final East Jay win came from Clott, Sutton, Austin May and Chase Ainsworth in the 4x200-meter relay in 1:56.

Adam McLaughlin paced South Adams, taking first in the long jump at 16 feet, three inches with teammate Shane Swygart in second. He also won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:56.50.

McLaughlin, Swygart, Will Rich and Ben Lehman united to take the 4x100-meter relay in 52.46, and Kyle DeArmond won the 110-meter hurdles in 17.18.

Sean Hatzel posted the only victory for West Jay taking the high jump at five feet, four inches.

Amanda Johnson grabbed the lone individual win in leading the East Jay girls to their victory at the meet. She took the 1,600-meter run in 5:51.36

Johnson was also in on both relay triumphs for the Chiefs, joining Kyle Wellman, Carrie Minnich and Erika Hunt to win the distance medley in 8:10.48. She teamed with Hunt, Betsy Knittle and Sara Mescher to take the 4x400-meter relay in 4:49.58.

Kinsey Lengerich took first in the 100-meter dash for South Adams in 13.43, and Amber Melick grabbed the shot put victory at 30 feet, eight inches.

Lengerich teamed with Ashton Morgan, Emily Steiner and Kristi Lehman for a time of 56.08 to take the 4x100-meter relay. Lehman, Jessica Sharp, Tori Cincotta and Jana Beitler teamed for the 1,200-meter sprint medley win in 3:27.

West Jay again had one victory, with Trisha Champ, Kayla Clevenger, Brittany O’Dell and Lindsey Current finishing first in the 4x200-meter relay in 2:12.92.

Junior League

Portland Junior League baseball and softball got under way Saturday, with a full slate of games, which included a shutout effort by Local 1620 pitchers Ben Walter and Skyler Petty. Each of them tossed three innings to lead 1620 to a 3-0 victory over Renegade Customs in Pee Wee Reese action.

In the other Pee Wee Reese game of the day First National Bank defeated Kiwanis 6-3.

In Rookie League baseball games it was Patriot Paints over Doane Pet Care 17-9, Health Care Strategies topping Jay County Monuments 14-12, Barnetts Auto Parts defeating Williams Auto Parts 18-10 and Coca Cola over Cooks Nursery 21-6.

Willie Mays action saw Ja-Mar get by Sertech Heating and Cooling 6-3, Inman-U-Loc knock off PG-14 11-6 and Optimist defeat Pak-a-Sak 9-6.

Walter started the game for Local 1620 and tossed three scoreless and hitless innings, striking out seven batters, including four in the second. Petty finished the game, striking out the side in the sixth inning to finish with six strikeouts.

Walter also doubled and scored a run for Local 1620, and Petty had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Christopher Skirvin scored the other run.

Dylan Parr knocked the lone hit for Renegade, knocking a single in the fifth inning to break up the no hitter.

First National 6, Kiwanis 3

Pitchers Aaron Emerick and Brandon Kauffman combined for 12 strikeouts for First National.

Emerick opened with three scoreless innings, striking out the final seven batters he faced. He also singled and scored a run.

Kauffman allowed the first three hitters he faced to score, but then struck out the side in the fourth inning and didn’t allow another base- runner.

Michael Sager singled and scored twice for First National. Dakota Steed doubles, and Kyle Davidson had a run and an RBI.

Ben Vance knocked two hits, including a double, and scored once for Kiwanis. Isaac Bruggeman had a single, a run and an RBI, and Trevor Walker also scored.

Fort basketball camp

Fort Recovery High School will host a basketball skills camp in June for boys who will be in grade four through nine next year.

The camp will be held on June 7, 9, 10 and 11 at Fort Recovery Middle School. Those in grade four through six will participate from 9 to 11 a.m., and the camp for students in grades 7 through nine will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It will be run by FRHS coach Brian Patch and his staff. The registration fee is $30, which includes a T-shirt and a basketball for each player.

Registration forms are available at FRMS. The deadline to register is Friday, may 14.
