Christmas coming in July (5/20/03)

Taking Note

A group of Randolph County residents are gearing up to bring Christmas in July to other Randolph County residents.

The Winchester Community High School Key Club and First Community Bank and Trust, Winchester, are teaming up for the AngelWish project sponsored by the AngelWorx volunteer program through LifeStream Services Inc.

AngelWish is a program that distributes goods and gifts to needy individuals identified through LifeStream’s network of services.

The bank is accepting cash, goods and gifts for the project now through July 25. The donations will be delivered in July to recipients.

LADIE’S TEA

A Ladie’s Tea will be hosted by Woman’s Life Insurance Society Local Club 730 on Thursday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the Mt. Tabor Methodist Church, 216 W. Pleasant St., Dunkirk.

The event is free and open to the public. The club is involved with community events, Girl Scouts, Dunkirk Headstart and the local schools.

CORRECTION

Abbey Woytik, a kindergartner at Judge Haynes Elementary was incorrectly identified by the school in a photo in the Thursday, May 15, edition of The Commercial Review. Abbey was one of the Warriors of the Month for April.

GRADUATE

Andrew Reitz graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington on May 10. A Portland native, Reitz is a 2000 graduate of Wabash College, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

He was one of 10 graduates to receive honorary recognition as a member of the Order of Barristers. He was chosen for this recognition based on his participation in a court competition, where he was named top oralist and his semi-finalist placement in the regional competition of the law school’s Trial Team.

Upon completion of his bar exam in August, Reitz will join the commercial litigation firm of Faruki, Ireland & Cox in Dayton, Ohio.

He is the son of Allen and Nancy Reitz, 1127 Wayside Place, Portland.

GARDEN FAIR

The Garden Fair at Minnetrista Cultural Center will be held Saturday, May 31 to Sunday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The fair offers information for the home gardener with programs, tours, speakers, gardening workshops and more than 20 vendors. The cafe will be open and offer light lunches.

Featured speakers for this year’s fair are Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, presenting All-Star Native for the Midwestern Garden at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Douglas Smith will present Landscape Color and Design on Sunday at 11 a.m.

A workshop entitled Garden Troughs will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Jean Gadziola teaching the art of making a home version of the expensive and popular miniature garden landscape trough. Cost for the workshop is $15 for instruction and a disposable form; or $25 for instruction and a reusable wooden form. Pre-registration is required for the workshop by May 26, by calling (765) 213-3549.

The fair is free and open to the public as is parking. Handicap parking is available in the Minnerista lot. Additional parking is available across the street at the fairgrounds.

EXHIBITS

Three exhibits at Minnetrista Cultural Center will be on display throughout the summer.

The Spirit of Oakhurst traces the history of the Oakhurst campus from the earliest settlers to the present-day Minnetrista.

Exotic Aquatics of the Great Lakes Region will be on display until June 8. This exhibition covers the infestation of new species that have become a threat to native habitats and commerce throughout the Great Lakes region. The origin, what damage is caused, and how they can be stopped are included in the display.

Made Right Here! Everyday Items Manufactured in East Central Indiana Between 1858-1975 is an exhibit about ECI’s industrial center based on natural gas and what happened when it ran out. The exhibit runs through Aug. 31.[[In-content Ad]]
