PORTLAND — Jay County made a run, but it couldn’t quite get enough offense to overcome the eighth-ranked team in Class 4A. It also had trouble stopping the freshman who led the way.

The Patriot girls basketball team got within four points in the final period only to take a 38-31 loss to the Huntington North Vikings Thursday.

The game turned in the third quarter, in which Huntington North took a 10-rebound advantage and Jay County shot just 2-of-12 from the field.

“Rebounding,” said Comer, noting the most important factor in the game. “I mean, the third quarter was the difference. ... We broke down on the boards. We’ve got to get better at that.”

Six-foot-two freshman Amber Clark led the Vikings during the key stretch and the entire game as she grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Her team outdid the Patriots on the glass by a 41-30 total, with most of that margin coming with a 15-5 third-quarter advantage.

Jay County was down just 22-20 midway through that third quarter, but didn’t score again for nearly four minutes. Huntington North put together a 9-0 run, including four points each from Clark and Chelsea Kilty, to pull ahead by 11.

The only Patriot point in the final four minutes of the period came on a Markie Runyon free throw with 14 seconds remaining.

Clark scored most of her game-high 12 points on put-backs. She also had three blocked shots.

“We had to keep Amber on the floor,” said Huntington North coach Jon Lippe. “We’ve been seeing glimpses of that. ... If you leave her on the floor long enough she makes plays for you to win the basketball game.

“(She made) big, game-changing plays. She made tons of plays. ...

“That kid is going to be a player. She could be one of the best posts we’ve ever had.”

After Jay County fell behind by as many as 11 points, Lisa Weitzel and Chelsea DeBoy combined to score the first six of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 31-27.

They were down by five after the Vikings’ Brittney Smelser split a pair of free throws with 1:37 to go. But, Clark grabbed the rebound off of the Smelser miss and put it back in to put the game away.

Despite the loss, Comer said he felt better than he did after the last game, a 52-31 drubbing by Elwood.

“I think we’re heading in the right direction again,” he said. “We came in tonight and broke the game down into four-minute stretches and we wanted to see how many four-minute stretches we could win. ...

“I’m proud of the girls tonight. We didn’t shoot it very well, but a lot of shots went in and out. I think we were patient on offense. We were doing things we wanted to do, we just couldn’t get the ball to go in the hole.”

Neither team’s guards could find the basket Thursday.

Jay County leading scorer Jamie Bruggeman and fellow guard Renae Laux combined to finish 0-for-12. Julie Stetzel and BreAnne Miller of the Vikings went a combined 0-for-19.

Both teams played essentially without their starting point guards. The Patriots’ Sara Garringer saw limited time as she is recovering from a foot injury, and Laura Davenport of Huntington North didn’t play at all after suffering a sprained ankle Tuesday.

Kilty finished behind Clark with nine points, and Whitney Stoffel added eight in a game in which neither team led by more than four points in the first half. Stoffel also grabbed nine rebounds.

Lippe said he felt the Patriots played well against his team defensively, and “they did a nice job of being patient on offense, probably as patient as I’ve seen that team ever. So, you’ve got to give them credit for that.”

Chelsea DeBoy and Lisa Weitzel shared a team-high of nine points for Jay County, and Markie Runyon added eight.

Runyon led the team with nine rebounds, and DeBoy added six. Runyon added two assists and two blocks, and Weitzel also had two assists.

Junior varsity

Cassandra Huelskamp came up huge in the final 11 seconds, scoring four points in that span to lift the Jay County junior varsity team to a 40-38 victory over Huntington North Thursday.

The Patriots (12-1) trailed by two with time winding down, but Huelskamp hit a lay-up and was fouled with 10.4 seconds to go. She missed the free throw, but the rebound went out of bounds off of a Viking player to give the ball back to Jay County.

Huelskamp took the inbound pass, was fouled and made both free throws with 6.3 seconds on the clock. Huntington North tried the push the ball down the court for a final shot, but Miranda Betz intercepted a pass and ran out the clock.

Huelskamp finished with 11 points to lead Jay County. Nicole Pfeifer and Betz each added eight points.

Brooke Armstrong scored 10 points for Huntington North, and Meghan Kline and Katie Karst notched five apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
