CONNERSVILLE - The home team had a glimmer of hope Friday night after kicking a field goal to cut its deficit to 6-3. In a flash Brandon Reynard pushed the Patriot lead to double digits and the offense never stopped rolling.

Jay County High School's football team scored 28 consecutive points and posted double digits in each of the final three quarters in 47-9 destruction of the Connersville Spartans.

It was the fifth straight loss of 19 points or more for Connersville following its opening win over Rushville.

"We've been waiting all year to put something together where we played all aspects of the game at the same time on the same night on the same field," said JCHS coach Shane Hill, whose team improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Olympic Athletic Conference. "If we're going to compete for a sectional title, we've got to play consistent football like that ... I was really pleased to see that come along."

The Spartans (1-5) got a 31-yard field goal from Benjamin Herdrich to make the score 6-3 two minutes into the second quarter. But just two plays later, Reynard showed the Jay County fans his lightning speed again.

The junior, who was last week's hero as he caught a 41-yard, game-winning touchdown pass against Muncie Southside with 5.9 seconds to play, ran a short pattern, but turned it into a huge play. Catching about a 2-yard swing pass from Billy Wellman on the right side, Reynard weaved out of the way of lunging would-be tackler Jacob Gilley. The rest was history as he darted down the sideline 73 yards for the touchdown. Reynard displayed his speed again later in the contest, taking the wind out of the Spartans' sails a second time. After Connersville's only touchdown of the game, he shot up the middle, ran past Herdrich and went all the way for an 89-yard kickoff return.

The TD return came with the Patriots using a new scheme, which leaves the outside unblocked while double-teaming the opposition in the middle in an effort to create just the type of seam Reynard exposed

"He exploded through there," said Hill. "We were concerned we weren't getting enough yards with the deadly guys we have back there. ... It just opened up for Reynard and he just shot through there like a missile."

Jay County also got a mammoth effort from the offensive line clearing holes for its pair of running backs.

Michael Jobe was responsible for the first Patriot touchdown on a 25-yard run in the first quarter, and

Lance Franklin followed Reynard's TD reception with a 7-yard scoring run less than three minutes later.

Franklin tacked on TD runs on 9 and 11 yards in the third quarter, and Jobe scored on a 32-yard scamper in the fourth. Both players went over 100 yards on the evening - Franklin had 116 yards on 12 carries and Jobe 112 yards on 10 rushes - as the Patriots racked up 216 yards on the ground.

"The five guys up front really came to play tonight," said Hill, while also complimenting the one-two running back punch that handled backfield duties in the absence of the injured Sam Lyons. "They controlled the line of scrimmage. ... Really they just dominated up front."

Franklin also led the defensive effort with 10 tackles.

The victory marked the 11th straight over Connersville for the Patriots. The 47 points are the most for JCHS the season, and just one fewer than last season's high total of 48 against Winchester.

In addition to the rushing totals, Billy Wellman threw for 107 yards, with four of his six completions going to Reynard (92 yards).

The evening was mostly a struggle for the Spartans, who got their only touchdown after they already trailed by 30 points. They did have success in the passing game as Zack Hufferd completed 18 of his 29 attempts for 160 yards, including a 9-yard pass to Sean Gardner for the touchdown.

However, he also tossed two interceptions. Aaron Daniels picked off one pass, and Kyle Cook (seven tackles) had the other as he tipped the ball in the backfield and then made a diving grab just before it reached the ground.

"We're set up to throw the ball fairly well when we do it right," said Connersville coach Scott Snodgrass, who has just one starter back from his 2006 squad.

"That's a new offense we implemented this year. ... We're just got a lot of stuff we need to improve on. We didn't execute very well. We had some mistakes that we just shouldn't have had. That's just the way it is."
