Clydesdales coming to Jay County

The Budweiser Clydesdale horses will be in Jay County in September for the Jay Miller 60 year A-B wholesaler event and five days of shows.

The horses will arrive in Portland on Sept. 21 for the wholesaler event for Jay County Beverage. The Clydesdales will be displayed at five shows running from Sept. 23 through 27.

Jay County Beverage, Portland, is a distributor of Anheuser-Busch products. Dunkirk's Saint-Gobain glass plant also produces millions of bottles of Anheuser-Busch each year.

Chef featured

Jay County High School grad Blake Elick was recently featured in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette in his role as chef at Hartley's restaurant, Fort Wayne.

Elick, who attended JCHS and started working in food at Pizza Hut in Portland, before moving on and graduating from Le Cordon Bleu culinary arts school in Chicago with a degree in Patisserie and Baking Arts.

Monthly member

First Bane of Berne was selected as the Berne Chamber of Commerce member of the month for July.

The bank recently received its second No. 1 rating for best performing banks in the state in a quarter within the last year.

The bank is headed by president Charles E. Isch and serves customers in Portland, Decatur, Bluffton and Van Wert as well as in Berne.

Credential

Beth Ralston, Head Start Director at Community and Family Services in Portland, recently received an Administrator Credential from the National Head Start Association Academy.

Ralston underwent an intensive course for Head Start directors, completing mini-modules in skills and knowledge of program administration and management.

The Head Start program helps provide pre-elementary skills to low income children. CFS and Head Start has 17 pre-school programs in Jay, Adams, Blackford, Wells, Randolph and Huntington county.

New manager

CenturyTel and EMBARQ named Mike Brill vice president and general manager recently for Indiana and Michigan.

Brill has worked in telecommunications for 26 years, most recently leading network services for EMBARQ in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

He has a master's degree in Business Administration from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne.

Community picnic

Wangler Hardware and Fort Recovery FFA are teaming up to host a free community picnic today on the lawn of the hardware store.

FFA will provide be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs and Wangler's will be giving away cookies and cupcakes. Drinks will also be provided.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations can be given but are not necessary.

Grain buyer

POET Biorefining has hired a new grain buyer.

Katie Orman joined POET and has worked with Countrymark and other grain locations. She most recently worked with an agricultural placement service.
