Coke headed to Rookie Final (07/13/04)

Local Roundup

Patriot Paints got halfway there, but its eight-run deficit heading into the final inning was too much to overcome.

Paints scored four times in the top of the sixth inning, but Coca-Cola ended the rally there to advance to the Portland Junior League Rookie League baseball tournament championship game by a 19-14 score. Coca-Cola will play Health Care Strategies for the title tonight at 8 p.m.

It could be a Coca-Cola evening, as First National Bank will take on Coca-Cola in the Rookie League softball championship game at 6 p.m.

The Coca-Cola baseball team had just a one-run lead after Patriot Paints scored three times in the top of the fifth inning Monday. However, it would come up big in the bottom of the frame.

After opening the inning with a strikeout, Coca-Cola scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth.

Dakota Derrickson scored the last of his three runs in the fifth. He finished with three hits, including a triple.

Case Retter and Andrew Moller also scored the last of their three runs each in that fifth inning rally. Retter had three hits, and Moller finished with two.

Brody Speed ripped three doubles and scored two runs, and Chandler Woodward had two hits and three runs. Cade VanSkyock added two hits and two runs.

Kalib Allen and Spencer Patters each posted three hits and two runs for Patriot Paints. Kameron Petty had two hits and three runs.

Williams plays well

Jay County graduate Heath Williams had a good showing in all three games as he played for the North team in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series this weekend.

Williams, who led the Patriots in home runs, hits, runs and stolen bases this year, went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI as the North team won game one 8-4. He finished 1-for-1 with a walk and a pair of runs in the North team’s 11-6, game-two win.

He also saw action defensively, but did not come to the plate, as the South team avoided the sweep by winning the rain-shortened third game 5-4.

Williams’ selection to the team marked the fourth straight year a Jay County player was chosen. He followed Adam Homan in 2003, Kyle Champ in 2002 and Alan Garringer in 2001.
