One good thing about Thursday's track meet - the athletes are unlikely to compete in worse conditions the rest of the season.
The host Patriots, Delta Eagles and Yorktown Tigers battled temperatures in the 30s and wind which blasted in their faces on the back stretch.
Jay County's girls finished the meet still undefeated, getting double wins from juniors Erika Hunt and Amanda Johnson en route to 68 points. Delta was second with 58, and Yorktown placed third with 30.
The Eagles won each of the final four running events to pull away for the victory in the boys competition with 68.5 points. Yorktown finished second with 44.5 points, and Jay County was third at 43.
Hunt has been the highlight for the Patriot girls so far. After winning both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in the delayed season opener at Richmond Tuesday, she pulled off the same double-play against Delta and Yorktown.
The pair of wins for Hunt didn't come easily as she faced a stiff challenge from Delta's Katelyn Eskew in the 100 hurdles. Hunt came over the final hurdle strong and edged Eskew at the finish line by just one hundredth of a second at 17.29.
She turned in a solid win in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 53.07 with teammate Stephanie Wellman in second place.
Johnson, a 2006 state qualifier in the 800 run, fought off Delta's Emily Miller in the race Thursday with a time of 2:36.08. She also took the 1,600 run by a wide margin in 6:19.23.
Brandon Reynard was the top runner for the JCHS boys, contributing to a pair of victories.
He earned his first career hurdles win, turning in a one-two finish with teammate Mason Shreve with a time of 42.61. Reynard was also a part of the first-place 4x100 relay team along with Sean Hatzell, Lance Franklin and Ruben Vela.
Shreve had the only other victory for the Patriot boys, easily winning the 110 hurdles in 16.57.
Jay County's girls got two more wins in the shortest and longest events of the night. Junior Sarah Mescher leaned at the finish line to win a tight 100 dash in 13.37, and Kylie Wellman dominated the 3,200 run in 14:13.
Nicole Pfeifer gave the Patriots their only field event victory in the long jump at 14 feet,1/2 inch.[[In-content Ad]]
