Colts collecting books (10/11/2008)

Taking Note

The Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Department of Child Services are teaming up to launch a Books for Youth program aimed at collecting books for the more than 14,000 Hoosier children who are in the foster care system.

Every DCS local office, including the Jay County office at 1237 W. Votaw St., Portland, will be a collection site for new and gently used books for kids.

The goal is to collect 350,000 books statewide, which would provide each foster child with 25 age appropriate books.

The program was started in December of 2006 and has collected more than 100,000 books to date.

For more information, contact the local office at (260) 726-7933 or go to http://www.in.gov/dcs/2895.htm.

Homemaker week

Next week is Indiana Extension Homemaker Association week, a time to celebrate the changes in the extension homemaker program over the years.

From its early years of programs on quilting and canning, today's extension program deals with issues such as identity theft and information about prescription drugs.

In Jay County there are a number of extension homemaker clubs that meet at various times and days of the week and in different parts of the county.

For more information or to become involved, phone (260) 726-7298 or (260) 726-4707.

Books and bingo

The Books with Bite Bingo reading program begins Monday at Jay County Public Library.

Interested adults 18 or older can pick up a bingo sheet at the library, then read to earn a bingo. Each bingo earns a prize. There will be a grand prize drawing from all completed bingo sheets.

The program runs from Oct. 13 to Oct. 31. For more information, contact the library at (260) 726-7890.
