Compton leads Jay County

Jay County roundup

RICHMOND — Sammi Compton scored five goals in three tournament games last year. She continued that hot streak in Tuesday’s season opener.
Compton scored twice for the Jay County High School girls soccer team as it started the 2012 campaign with a 3-1 victory over the Richmond Red Devils.
The Patriots grabbed the lead less than eight minutes into the game when freshman Gabbie Mann took control of a throw-in and then passed the ball to Compton in the center of the field. Compton’s shot to the left corner connected at the 32:21 mark.
Mann pushed the JCHS advantage to 2-0 less than three minutes later when she tallied her first career goal. Richmond closed the gap with a goal at the 31:27 mark of the second half, but Compton scored again on an assist from Andrea Bruggeman for the final margin.
Brooke Reynard came up with three saves for the Patriots.
JCHS won the junior varsity game 1-0 on a goal by Cydney Huey.

Maddison Baughn had Jay County’s only par of the day, on the par-4 seventh hole, and added two bogies for a 58. Alysia Fennig also shot 58, and Abby Saxman finished with a 59.
