Compton scores 3 for JCHS

Jay County roundup

In a single game, Sammi Compton scored half as many goals as she had all of last season.
The Jay County High School junior scored all of the host Patriots’ goals Thursday, including two on assists from Ericka Reynolds, as they knocked off the visiting Heritage Patriots 3-2.
The game was tied at two for nearly 40 minutes after the teams traded goals in the first half, but the Reynolds-to-Compton connection came through with 12:20 left on the clock. Reynolds, who had the lone goal for JCHS (1-1) in the season-opening 2-1 loss to Richmond, passed across the goal from the right side and Compton chipped the ball in to complete her hat trick.
Compton also scored on a pass from Reynolds less than five minutes into the game, and had a goal at the 10:56 mark off an assist from Cydney Huey.
Mollie May tallied five saves in the victory.

Boys soccer ties again
Two games into the season, Jay County is still seeking its first decision.
JCHS, which tied Muncie Central 3-3 in Tuesday’s season opener, got the same result by the same score Thursday against the visiting Heritage Patriots.
All of the scoring came in the second half, with Jay County taking the lead when Alex Dunn tallied two goals in a span of two minutes.
Heritage pulled even with 13 minutes left and JCHS (0-0-2) grabbed the lead on a Dillon Ainsworth score a minute later. However, Heritage forged another tie with just eight minutes on the clock.
Dunn recorded his first goal on an assist from Kaelin Jewell and his second on a penalty kick. Alex Abbott assisted on Ainsworth’s goal.

Heritage (0-1-1) got two goals from sophomore Aaron Horne and one from senior Isaiah Horne. Austin Cowan made three saves for Jay County.

No. 7 Eagles top spikers
The Patriot volleyball team couldn’t muster much offense Thursday against Class 3A No. 7 Delta, dropping its season opener 25-15, 25-14, 25-17 to the visiting Eagles.
Mariah Hornaday led Jay County in the defeat with eight digs and seven kills. Alyssa Rigby added six digs for the Patriots, who had trouble against Delta’s service game and size at the net.
Maria Murphy had four blocks, four digs and two kills, and Malarie Houck had two kills and a pair of digs.
The JCHS junior varsity team lost 25-23, 25-12.

Netters shut out
Jay County’s boys tennis team picked up a few games Thursday, but still suffered a 5-0 defeat at home to the Norwell Knights.
The Patriots, who lost all five matches 6-0, 6-0 to Marion Tuesday, earned two games apiece at the No. 2 positions. Brad Leuthold lost 6-0, 6-2 to Tanner Bowen at No. 2 singles, and the team of Matt Shrack and Tony Schwieterman fell 6-1, 6-1 to Brandon Taylor and Tyler Smith at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 singles Derek Smith lost 6-1, 6-0 to Reid Imel, and at No. 1 doubles Chance Fuller and Morton Garringer fell 6-1, 6-0 to Kyle Fillman and Tanner Mathews. Nick Leuthold lost 6-0, 6-0 to Mitchell Wilson at No. 3 singles.
