Confined feeding buildings top June permits (07/15/06)

Two separate permits issued in June for confined feeding buildings and another one for a home had combined values of nearly $1 million.

The total value of projects issued permits during June by Jay/Portland Building and Planning was $1,419,328.

The permit with the largest value was issued to David Graber, 4171 North 500 West, Pennville, for three confined feeding buildings with a combined estimated value of $480,000.

A permit for a $300,000 home/garage at 335 South 400 West, Portland, was issued to Doug Inman, while Brent Muhlenkamp, 4733 North 650 East, Portland, received a permit for a $175,000 confined feeding building.

A permit was also issued to Tracey Minnich, 2915 North 200 East, Portland, for a $130,000 home and garage.

Lutz named

CR’s ad manager

Jeanne M. Lutz has been named advertising manager of The Commercial Review, following the retirement of Don Gillespie, CR publisher Jack Ronald announced Friday.

Lutz joined the daily newspaper’s advertising staff in 1989 after working for several years in retailing. A resident of rural Bryant, she is a graduate of Bryant High School and is a member of St. Marys Catholic Church.

Rezoning approved

for ethanol plant

The site for a proposed ethanol plant in Randolph County won rezoning approval from the county’s Area Planning Commission this week, though the action won’t be finalized until approval by the Randolph County Commissioners on July 17.

Cardinal Ethanol plans to construct the plant on U.S. 32 at Randolph county road 600 East.

With a pricetag of about $150 million, the plant will employ 40 to 45 people.

Tyson trimming

jobs nationally

Tyson Foods Inc. announced this week it will eliminate 850 jobs nationwide in an effort to cut $200 million in expenses.

The company said 420 jobs will be cut and 430 other positions that are now unfilled will be eliminated.

Most of the job cuts are at the management level. Tyson employs 114,000. The Wall Street Journal reported most of the layoffs will be complete by Sept. 30.

To make hot cars

look even hotter

Plans were unveiled this week for a partnership between Revenge Designs LLC and Lingenfelter Performance Engineering to modify 2006-2007 Pontiac GTOs in Decatur for the sports car market.

The group expects to produce 1,000 modified cars by the fall of next year and to employ 40 at the former All American Homes Plant No. 2, near 13th and Patterson Street in Decatur.

The modifications will include a wider body, a boost in horsepower, a high performance brake system, and a number of other custom extras.

Company officials told The Journal-Gazette this week that the modified GTOs will cost about $45,000 to $55,000 apiece, depending upon which package is selected.

That’s roughly $13,000 to $23,000 more than the stock version of the car.

Hybrid chassis

venture announced

Productive Concepts Inc. and Workhorse Custom Chassis of Union City this week announced a partnership with Azure Dynamics Corp. of Toronto to begin making hybrid chassis for trucks in Randolph County.

The hybrid chassis will be aimed at the delivery truck market for customers such as UPS and FedEx.

The company already has its first order for 2,000 units.

June sales boosted

CVS Corp. has attributed its boost in June sales to acquisitions and pharmacy receipts.

Officials with the Woonsocket, R.I., company told The Wall Street Journal recently that sales rose 8.4 percent in June. Sales had only been predicted to increase by 7.8 percent.

CVS recently acquired 700 Sav-On and Osco stores after the demise of Albertson’s Inc. Pharmacy sales at CVS stores accounted for 69 percent of the total June sales despite the recent introduction of lower-priced generic drugs.

Supplies for videos

Movie Gallery, 915 N. Meridian St., Portland, will begin accepting donations of school supplies for area children today.

Each person who makes a donation will receive one free movie rental per day. Any school supplies will be accepted. Donations will be accepted until Aug. 6.

The donations will be taken to the township trustee’s office for distribution. If a large quantity of donations is received, some may be taken to Jay County schools to be passed out to needy students.

New business opens

A new computer business has opened in Decatur.

FrugalBrothers.com sells business class computer workstations, laptops and file servers. The company also offers networking, hardware and software.

The company, founded by Cindee Naylor of Decatur and Dennis Wygant of Berne, offers up to five years of hardware support and full warranties on service work.

Naylor has more than 10 years experience in the IT/technology industry. Wygant has more than 10 years of experience in networking and system integration.

Fuqua Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep, Dunkirk, recently hired a new sales associate.

Jerry Jones, a former high school teacher, was hired to serve on the sales staff. Jones is a graduate of Ball State University and Hartford City High School. He was a teacher at Delta High School for 34 years.

Helicopter rides offered

Harvest Depot, located on the southside of Berne, will have helicopter rides during the Swiss Days festival.

Rides will begin July 28 at 10:30 a.m. and July 29 at 9 a.m. The rides will be provided by JR Aviation, and Indiana-based company which specializes in flight training, aerial tours, and helicopter sales and service.

Also at Harvest Depot during the festival, the Indiana Army National Guard will have a display set up and representatives of E Troop 238th Cavalry will be on hand to answer questions.

Two boxes in one

EMBARQ recently introduced a new integrated voicemail system which allows customers to retrieve both their home telephone and wireless phone voicemail messages from one mailbox.

The service is called EMBARQ Together Phone PaQsm. It notifies customers on both talking devices when they have a message. Also, customers can call their home phones for free from their wireless phones. The two phone service bills are combined into one.[[In-content Ad]]
