Consistent Jay County golfers still perfect (04/30/04)

Jay County Roundup

Call them consistent.

The Jay County golfers posted a trio of 39s Thursday in a 157-163 victory over the host Blackford Bruins. The Patriots stayed perfect at 6-0 with the win.

Returning after a two-match lay-off, No. 1 player Tyler Johnston shared in a four-way tie for match medalist honors with a 39. He sat out the other two matches this week with back soreness.

Matching Johnston’s 39 were Adam Foster — who shot a 34 in his absence Tuesday — and Alex Hunt. Chris Mays of Blackford also got into the act with a 39.

Scores didn’t vary much in the match, with just three separating the best score from the worst.

Nathan McClung rounded out the Patriots’ varsity score with a 40, and Jesse Shawver shot a 42.

The Bruins posted a pair of 41s and 42s in losing by six.

The junior varsity match was even closer, with Jay County losing the tiebreaker in a 189-189 tie.

With the top four golfers from each team totaling matching scores, the tie was broken by the No. 5 JV players. Wes Ford had a 53 for Blackford, compared to Chris Shannon’s 57 for the Patriots.

Leading Jay County was junior Josh Thornburg with a personal-best 39. Ben Freeman shot a 46, Gray Suman posted a 47 and Travis Smith notched a 57.

The Patriots will play in the Winchester Invitational Saturday.

Jay girls edge Owls

The Jay County girls track team needed to win the final event Thursday to stay above .500. It got the job done.

The Patriots pulled off a win in the 4x400-meter relay for a 67-65 victory over the host Muncie Burris Owls.

Paul Imel finally lost a dual meet race for the boys team, but not by much, in a 69-54 loss to Burris.

Jessica Heitkamp, Nicole Pfeifer, Rose Weaver and Jill Roughia took the 4x400 relay as the Patriot girls team overcame a three-point deficit in a time of 4-minutes, 31 seconds.

Heitkamp also grabbed two individual wins, and Alyssa Johnson was in on three Patriot victories as well.

Heitkamp was first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05. She also took the 200-meter dash in 28.0.

Johnson continued her distance domination, finishing her 3,200-meter run victory in 12:25. Her other victory came in the 1,600-meter run in 5:48.

She teamed with Roughia, Jessica Mosier and Nicole Van Skyock to win the 4x800-meter relay in 10:32.

Roughia finished with one individual victory, taking the 800-meter run in 2:38. Abby Schmiesing was first in the high jump at four feet, eight inches.

Imel was in on three wins for the Jay County boys team.

He remained perfect in dual meets in the 100-meter dash in 11.27 and the 400-meter dash in 53.95. He also teamed with Adam Grile, Lucas McBride and Justin Gilbert to win the 4x100-meter relay in 45.40.

Imel’s first dual-meet loss of the year came in the 200-meter dash, which he dropped by just three hundredths of a second in 23.06.

McBride finished first in the long jump at 20 feet even.

David Stith and Steven Castillo paced sweeps in the shot put and discus.

Stith won the shot put at 47 feet. He was followed by Joseph Vormohr and Tyler Bash.

Castillo took the discus with a toss of 135 feet, nine inches. Stith was second, and Chip Feazell placed third.

Jay County’s boys team will compete in the New Castle Invitational today at 5 p.m. The girls team will go to the Muncie Relays Saturday at 11 a.m.
