Construction activity slows for winter

New construction, as usual, slowed down as winter set in with the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department issuing 11 build permits in December.
Permits were issued totaling $286,200, topped by a turkey confined feeding building for Timothy Hein, 528 South 550 East, Portland, at a cost of $160,000.

Reception for Rob
A reception honoring Rob Weaver upon his retirement as executive director of John Jay Center for Learning will be held at the Weiler Building from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12.
The public is invited to attend.

State of the county, Dunkirk
Commissioners’ president Milo Miller Jr. and Dunkirk Mayor Ron Hunt will present their State of the County and State of the City of Dunkirk addresses at the next Jay County Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast Wednesday morning.
The breakfast will start at 7:30 a.m. at the Dunkirk Elks Lodge. Cost is $5.

Training software
Mercer County will soon be able to offer new job training programs thanks to a recent software purchase.
The Workforce Investment Act Office should be receiving the new software and be ready to offer new courses by March. The job training purchase  of $31,054 was approved by the Mercer County Commissioners recently and training will be financed through a $334,500 Ohio Job and Family Services grant that was won in April.
Residents of Auglaize, Mercer, Hardin and Van Wert counties in Ohio will be able to take advantage of the training programs if they meet eligibility requirements such a recent loss of work or economic hardship.
The software will include programs on how to be a good employee as well as others like basic computer skills.

Chamber meeting
The Geneva Chamber of Commerce will meet Tuesday at noon in the Geneva Town Hall community room. The program will be presented by the Adams County Health Department. Cost for lunch is $8.

Ninth store
CVS Pharmacy will open its ninth location in Fort Wayne with hopes the location will be ready for business by summer.
The company will put $1.9 million to turn a former Hardees location at 6279 E. State Blvd. into a new pharmacy location. The business should employ about 20 full- and part-time workers when open.
CVS posted 2009 sales of nearly $100 billion as it continues to compete against drugstore company Walgreen Co. and others.

Tyson dies
Former chairman of the board and CEO of Tyson Foods. Inc Don Tyson died Thursday.
Tyson was the son of company founder John W. Tyson and the father of current chairman John H. Tyson. He was 80.
He served as president of the company starting in 1966 and was named chairman and CEO in 1967, where he served until 1983, when he turned over the president title to executive Leland Tollett. Tyson turned over the CEO duties to Tollett in 1991 and gave the chairman duty over when he retired in 1995.

E-mail needed
The Jay County Farm Service Agency is asking producers interesting in receiving information from the office to send their e-mail addresses to the county office.
Due to budget cuts the office will be moving away from printed newsletters and instead will send e-mail information.

Scholarship support
Moser Motor Sales, Inc., Portland is sponsoring two scholarships through the Built Ford Tough scholarship program supporting local FFA chapters.
Moser Motors will support the program by sponsoring two $1,000 scholarships for Jay County and South Adams FFA members.
To be eligible, FFA members must submit an application at www.ffa.org and obtain a signature from their local Moser Motors dealership. Moser Motors operates locations in Portland and Berne.

Nursing scholarship
R&R Medical Staffing Inc., Decatur, is offering one full scholarship for the 2011 Certified Nursing Assistant class.
Applications will be accepted until Jan. 18.
The scholarship criteria will be based on financial need, future career goals, a written application, interview, professional and personal references and successful application to the program.
Applications are available at R&R’s office, 915 S. 11th St., Decatur, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Chamber sponsor
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce is offering two table sponsorships for its Jan. 29 annual meeting.
The regular sponsor option costs $50 and will have a company/organization sign at the table, name listed in the program and recognition from the podium.
There is also a premium sponsorship option for $250, which offers the same benefits as the standard table option but also includes a table escort, early dismissal for dinner, premium seating and dinner for six.
The annual meeting will also include a silent auction.

Banking board
The Indiana Bankers Association recently elected its board of directors, including Andrew J. Briggs, CEO of Bank of Geneva, and Robert G. Jones president and CEO of Old National Bank.
Both were elected as regional directors, Briggs for the Northeast Region and Jones for the Southwest Region.

Ceramic sale
Saint-Gobain recently completed the sale of its advanced ceramics business to CoorsTek for $245 million.
The deal was announced in June and gained approval of competition authorities on Dec. 31.

Bank deal complete
Old National Bancorp’s merger with Monroe Bancorp has been completed.
The $90.1 million transaction will bring 15 banking centers in central and south-central Indiana under Old National. Old National is the third-largest bank branch in Indiana.

More openings
Dollar General Corp. announced it plans to open 625 stores, adding around 6,000 jobs in 2011.
The company will begin opening locations in Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire as part of the fiscal year outlook. The company operates more than 9,200 stores in the United States.

Calendar contest
Electric Consumer is accepting entries for its annual Cooperative Calendar of Student Art for 2012.
Interested K-12 students will submit artwork coinciding with their grade, for example, first graders will submit art for January and 12th graders will submit for December. Kindergarteners will design the cover art.
