Contest winners named at Shanks

General Shanks Elementary recently held its Optimist Oratorical Speech Contest. The winners were Reid Claycomb, fifth grade, the son of Chad and Angel Claycomb, Portland; and Ashlyn Dow, fourth grade, the daughter of Cory and Marsi Dow, Portland. They will represent General Shanks in the county contest on Thursday at Judge Haynes Elementary.
Alternates were Cooper Jacks, fifth grade, the son of Troy and Angie Jacks, Portland; and Mary Hartman, fifth grade, the daughter of James and Robin Hartman, Portland.
The annual oratorical contest will be held on March 19. Any student who was 19 or younger as of Dec. 31 and wants to participate can write a 4 to 5 minute speech on the topic “Why My Voice Is Important.” For more information, call Judy Williamson at (260) 726-3686 or Kathy Carpenter at (260) 726-3656. Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded.

The Campbell Brothers Sacred Steel will perform Friday at
Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland. The group plays African-American gospel music with electric steel guitar and vocals.

Dean’s list
Ericka Lennartz and Hayden Pottkotter, both of Fort Recovery High School, were named to the dean’s list at Rhodes State College.
