Cowan tops Starfires

MUNCIE — A state-ranked foe proved to be too much for the Starfires.
The Class A No. 7 Cowan Blackhawks grabbed control in the first inning Tuesday and defeated the South Adams High School softball team 14-0 in five innings.
Lily Taing took the loss as Cowan scored eight runs against her in the first inning. All 14 runs were earned as she gave up seven hits and 14 walks.
Lyndsey Chandler paced the offense for the Starfires (3-18) with a pair of hits. Reba Morehouse had the only other hit.
Tigers top Jay JV
BLUFFTON — The Jay County High School junior varsity baseball team quickly saw a tie game slip away as it fell 9-5 Tuesday to the Bluffton Tigers.
The Patriots (4-7) scored three times in the top of the third inning to pull even at 4-4. However, Bluffton responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the advantage.
Jason Houston gave up all nine runs in three innings.
Blake Boughman led the JCHS offence, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Houston added a double, a single, two runs and one RBI.
Eight win titles
Portland’s Judan Judo had a big day as hosts of the Indiana State Judo Championships Saturday, winning the team title as eight of its athletes finished in first place.
Amanda Buell, Caleb Culy, Nathaniel Fodrea, Jesse Gallardo, Nichol Kunkler, Natalie Miles, Cody Rowles and Adam Wilhelm all took home championships for Judan. Second-place efforts came from Lindsay Aker, Jamie Chan, Maricela Chan, Tori Drumm, Crosby Heniser, David Heath, Daniel Ostrowski, Spencer Patterson, Chelsea Russell and Brayden Sprunger.
Mallory Aker, Kaleb Baldwin, Maria Chan, Alex Edwards, Megan Edwards, Jordan LeMaster, Sheldon Minch, Nick Parrish and Cameron Smitley all finished third.[[In-content Ad]]
