Income drops

Anheuser-Busch Companies had a 24 percent drop in third-quarter net income.

The company, which makes Budweiser and Bud Light, also has lowered its 2005 earnings forecast for the fourth time, The Wall Street Journal reported recently.

The drop in income has been attributed to strong competition from domestic competitors and customers’ decreased interest in beer.

Saint-Gobain Containers, Dunkirk, makes bottles for Anheuser-Busch.

Andersons reports loss

The Andersons, Inc. has reported a net loss of $600,000 in the third quarter this year.

In the same three-month period last year, the company had a net income of $1 million.

However, total revenues for the third quarter this year are $289 million, compared to $248 million in 2004.

The company has a facility near Dunkirk.

Attends seminar

A local eye doctor recently attended an educational seminar in Fort Wayne. Dr. Steven DeGroff, who has practices in Berne and Winchester, attended the seminar on Oct. 26.

The seminar included topics on neuroophthalmology and retinal disease. New post-operative medications used after cataract surgery also were discussed. DeGroff has been practicing optometry in Berne since 1989, and in Winchester since April.

Program helps community

Old National Bancorp recently found a way to encourage its employees to get involved in their communities.

The bank has created a program, which gives employees up to two hours per month of paid time off to volunteer for local organizations.

In addition, if 10 or more employees participate in a community event, $250 or more will be donated to the organization. If 20 or more participate, $500 or more will be donated.

“The new ONe Community program not only provides support but encourages associates to volunteer for activities that improve and strengthen the communities where they live and work,” Bob Jones, president and chief executive officer of Old National, said in a press release.
