It was not a pleasant night for the Patriots.
Playing through a driving rain for most of the evening, the Jay County High School boys soccer team suffered its second shutout in three games Thursday in a 3-0 loss to the visiting Liberty Christian Lions.
Liberty Christian (10-2-3) got on the scoreboard 12 minutes into the game after the Patriots (8-4-3) were called for a foul inside the 18-yard box. David Crook converted the ensuing penalty kick to the right corner for a 1-0 lead.
Crook scored again on a breakaway two minutes later as he beat goalie Austin Cowan to the ball and chipped it into the net. He finished off his hat trick with a score at the nine-minute mark of the opening half.
Cowan finished with five saves for JCHS, which also fell 6-0 Sept. 22 to Marion.
Jets blast SAHS
MONROE — The South Adams High School volleyball team suffered a 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 loss Thursday to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
Alyssa Bluhm turned in a team-high nine kills for the Starfires (6-17). She also had six assists, five digs and four aces.
Lily Taing totaled 10 assists and two aces.
South Adams also dropped the junior varsity match, 25-15, 25-18.
Newsome, Bantz lead
UNION CITY — Phillip Newsome and Logan Bantz ran wild on host West Side Thursday as the West Jay Middle School eighth grade football team rolled to a 50-8 victory while the seventh graders dominated for a 34-0 win.
Newsome scored four touchdowns as the WJMS eighth graders improved to 3-2.
Daniel Meranda and Will Watson each returned interceptions for touchdowns, Mason Cochran returned a fumble for a touchdown and Drew Huffman also scored for the Eagles.
Bantz racked up three TDs as the West Jay seventh grade squad improved to 3-1-1. Jacob Geesaman and Tyler Jester added one score apiece.
Eagle boys win
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s boys cross country team earned a win Thursday over the visiting Liberty Christian Lions.
Tanner Craw paced the Eagles in the victory with a fourth place finish.
Travis Barton took fifth place with Quinton Hugget in seventh, Jake Myers eighth and Nathan Hamilton ninth.[[In-content Ad]]
