Crooks earns promotion (5/21/05)

Red Gold has named a Portland man senior director of manufacturing.

As the director of manufacturing, Mike Crooks will be responsible for overseeing manufacturing operations at the Geneva, Elwood and Orestes Red Gold tomato processing facilities.

“Mike is the right person to lead Red Gold into the future,” Brian Reichart, Red Gold president and chief executive officer, said in a press release. “Mike possesses all of the qualities and skills to maintain Red Gold’s growth direction, and he has the technical experience necessary for the challenges of the job.”

Crooks has been the plant manager at Red Gold in Geneva since 1997. He lives in Portland with his family.

“Mike Crooks has more than 30 years of food manufacturing and engineering experience,” director of human resources, Tim Ingle, said in a press release. “Mike spent time early in his career with Libby’s then became vice president of engineering for Naas Foods and later became the general manager for Red Wing Indiana Manufacturing which included the Geneva plant.”

Red Gold manufactures several brands including Red Gold, RedPack, Tuttorosso, Sacramento, Teresa, Glorietta and iL Migliore.

Engels new EJ rep

Edward Jones has hired a new investment representative for its Portland office.

Michael Engels, CFP, was hired for the position. He will work at the 224 W. Lincoln St. branch, which is located in the same plaza as LoBill Foods.

“We’re very proud to have Michael represent us in Portland,” Douglas Hill, the firm’s managing partner, said in a press release.

“The people of this community have grown to rely on our firm for their investment needs, and I am confident Michael will continue our outstanding tradition by providing one-on-one service.”

Engels holds an electrical engineering degree and a master’s degree in business administration. He has a securities license, and CFP and ChFC designations.

Meeting scheduled

The East Central Indiana Workforce Investment Board Executive Committee will meet Friday, June 3, at noon.

The meeting, which was originally scheduled for Friday, May 20, will be held at the Muncie WorkOne Center.

Alerts now available

Sprint announced this week that its wireless customers with phones capable of receiving text messages can receive AMBER Alerts.

The company is one of the first wireless carriers to provide this free opt-in service. AMBER Alerts will be sent to Sprint PCS phones through text messages to enable customers to assist law enforcement in the search for a missing child.

“Sprint customers can now harness the power of wireless data in another truly important and innovative way,” Jack Moore, Sprint public affairs manager, said in a recent press release.

“Our partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is a perfect match between the two organizations, since Sprint customers have already demonstrated an affinity for sending and receiving wireless messages. It’s very exciting that millions of our customers have the opportunity to add their eyes to AMBER Alert searches.”

To sign up to receive the text message alerts, visit www.sprint.com or www.wirelessAMBERalerts.org, and select up to five zip codes. When an alert is activated, customers who have selected a zip code in the alert area will receive a text message.

Celina Supercenter open

A grand opening ceremony was held on May 11 for the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Celina, Ohio.

The new store is located at 1950 Havemann Road, which is across from the old Wal-Mart. The store’s opening is expected to create 250 new jobs.

Among the features of the 203,091-square-foot store are 36 general merchandise departments, a grocery, a gas station, a snack bar and a pharmacy.

New CEO

Merchants Trust Company recently appointed a new president and chief executive officer.

Terri E. Matchett was selected to replace retiring president James L. Thrash.

Matchett is a graduate of Ball State University. She began her career at Peoples Loan and Trust Company in 1974. The bank later became American National Bank and Trust, then Old National Bancorp.

Matchett is a member of several organizations including the Rotary Club in Muncie, the Minnetrista Cultural Center Board, the Ball Memorial Hospital Board, the Delaware Advancement Corporation Board, and the East Central Indiana Estate Planning Council.

Real estate school

RE/MAX of Indiana is offering real estate salesperson and broker licensing courses.

The RE/MAX School of Real Estate classes can be taken in six to eight weeks or an accelerated one week class.

In order to obtain a salesperson or broker’s license you must be at least 18 years old, have 54 hours of classroom instruction, and successfully complete the State License Exam.

“RE/MAX is a proven leader in real estate and agent development, so the RE/MAX School of Real Estate is a logical offering for our organization,” regional director Jonathan Nicholas said in a press release. “We will offer experienced instructors and an up-to-date curriculum to provide attendees with a great foundation to begin their real estate career.”

R.I.S.E. awards

The deadline for healthcare facilities in Indiana to apply for the first-ever 2005 Rural Indiana Smoke-Free Environment awards is Friday.

The awards will be given to healthcare facilities that have adopted and are enforcing a 100 percent smoke-free policy. The Indiana Rural Health Association and Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation will choose the award recipients.

To qualify for the honor, the facility must show evidence of a 100 percent smoke-free policy in all buildings, on all grounds and in all organization-operated vehicles. An explanation of how the policy was achieved also should be included in the application.

Awarded accreditation

Bluffton Regional Medical Center’s laboratory has earned the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

The commission evaluated the laboratory’s performance on its compliance with 300 standards in relation to quality control, safety, infection control, leadership, management of human resources, management of information, ongoing performance improvement activities and other issues.

“We strive to improve the quality of our services, and meeting the Joint Commission’s rigorous ... standards is an important recognition of our efforts,” John Martinski, laboratory director, said in a press release.

The lab is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for patients who need inpatient and outpatient lab services.

CEO joins board

Jack Cassidy, the president and chief financial officer of Cincinnati Bell, recently joined the Wright Center for Innovation for Advance Data Management and Analysis board of directors.
