The Commercial Review's advertising team was honored this week with first and second place finishes in the Hoosier State Press Association's advertising awards.

The team won first place for it's annual coupon book in the non-traditional revenue products category.

The ad department also clinched second place for its Halloween coloring page in the multiple advertisements with a common theme category.

The CR advertising department is run by ad manager Jeanne Lutz, Maralene Giddings and Lindsey Rogers.

Ad representative Bonita Freeman, who retired earlier this year, also contributed to the 2008-2009 effort.



Baseball award

The Commercial Review sports editor Ray Cooney was honored this week by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Cooney received a 2009 Outstanding Baseball Media Award from the organization.

Cooney was selected by area baseball coaches for "efforts to give high school baseball outstanding coverage during the 2009 season."

Cooney, a native of the Cleveland area, has been sports editor for The CR for more than seven years.

Exploration

A Houston-based oil and gas exploration company was recently conducting exploration in southern Jay County.

Sierra Resources, LLC., recently was performing seismic exploration in the area as it is probing the former Trenton Field.

Sierra targets formerly harvested oil and gas fields in an attempt to locate additional resources once deemed too difficult or not profitable enough to extract.

Building report

A permit for Portland's Hudson Family Park topped the September permit report from the Jay/Portland Building and Planning Departmet.

The work, which will include digging a pond, creating an ampitheater and completing paving, is estimated at $521,565.

Cardiology addition

Fort Wayne Cardiology has reached an agreement to join Parkview Health.

The cardiology group signed a letter of intent with the Fort Wayne provider, which may help create more cost-effective heart care. The agreement is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1.

Program recognized

The Adams Memorial Hospital Diabetes Connection program was recently recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

The program was first recognized in 2003 and has been honored again this year for its high-quality education as part of patient care.

An estimated 20.8 million people in the U.S. suffer from diabetes.

New CEO

Mercer Health has appointed a Paula J. Detterman as its new CEO.

Detterman replaces former CEO Jim Wermert, who retired at the end of September.

She will take over management of the health group, which operates Mercer County Community Hospital and other medical facilities.

She was most recently president and CEO of Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro, Ohio.

Detterman has more than 20 years experience in rural and community hospitals.

Pizza donations

Wills IGA in Redkey will be supporting Redkey Elementary School by donating proceeds from its pizza sales.

Redkey Elementary will receive $2 for Hunt Brothers pizzas purchased from the store. Those interested in helping should remove the Proof of Purchase from the pizza box and deliver it to the school.

FEMA funding

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency announced $62,677 will be awarded to the Geneva Volunteer Fire Department.

The funding comes from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, which will provide $560 million in aid to fire departments nationwide.

The grant program has provided national fire departments with more than $3.6 billion since 2002.[[In-content Ad]]
