Crull to lead WJMS (07/27/05)

By By JACK RONALD-

The most highly-honored teacher in the Jay School Corporation is the new principal at West Jay Middle School.

Mike Crull — Indiana Geography Teacher of the Year in 2002, the state’s top economics teacher in 2001, and a finalist for Indiana Teach-er of the Year in 2003-04 — won unanimous approval from the Jay School Board at a special noon meeting on Tuesday.

“Mr. Crull rose to the top very quickly,” said superintendent Barbara Downing as she recommended the longtime West Jay social studies teacher for the job.

Seventeen applications were received, Downing said. “We’ve gone through a thorough process.”

Crull, who began his teaching career in Florida, has taught seventh grade social studies and industrial technology at West Jay since 1987.

He received his bachelor’s degree in industrial and vocational education from Ball State University in 1982, adding an endorsement to teach social studies in 1993. In 1999, he received his master’s degree in secondary education from Ball State, where he is now pursuing his administration/supervision license.

Crull received a two-year contract at $62,500 a year and starts to work on Friday.

Active in a number of state teaching organizations, Crull is a member of the board of the Geography Educators Network of Indiana and serves as executive director of the Indiana Council for Social Studies. He has been a consultant to the Indiana Department of Education on social studies and assessment since 2002. He also serves on the advisory board of Taylor University’s teacher education program.

Crull was Teacher of the Year for the Jay School Corporation in 2003-04 and was presented an Excellence in Teaching Award by the parents and student body at West Jay.

He has published articles in Hoosier Economists and Viewpoints, a magazine on global education.[[In-content Ad]]
