Current seeded at No. 5 (05/20/08)

JCHS girls track

INDIANAPOLIS - It's going to take some big improvement if a trip to Bloomington is in the cards.

Jay County High School's highest seeded athlete in tonight's girls track regional tournament at Ben Davis is No. 5. Its two-time state qualifier is seeded ninth. And only the top three athletes in each event are guaranteed a spot in the state meet.

Based on sectional results, junior Lindsey Current offers the Patriots their best opportunity for a state berth. Her runner-up height of 5 feet, 1 inch at the Muncie Central sectional has her in a tie for the fifth seed.

The top four athletes in the event all finished at 5 feet, 2 inches in the sectional.

Competitors can also earn state berths by achieving the state standard, which is 5 feet, 4 ½ inches in the high jump this year.

Amanda Johnson, a senior, is a two-time state qualifier for Jay County. She finished 11th in the state finals last season, but will have to greatly improve on her sectional time of 2:29.48 in order to have a chance to run for a state medal again.

She is the No. 9 seed in the regional after running a sectional championship time of 2-minutes, 29.48 seconds last week. The top seed is North Central's Verena Vogel at 2:20.2.

However, Johnson has come from out of nowhere before. She was seeded sixth in the 800 in each of the last two seasons and finished third and second respectively.

She owns the JCHS school record at 2:17.43.

The state standard is 2:16.8.

Freshman Aly Miller is the only other Patriot seeded better than 10th in any event as she holds the No. 9 spot in the 3,200 run.

Kylie Wellman is the No. 10 seed in the 3,200, joining fellow No. 10 seeds Erika Hunt (100 hurdles), Cara Garringer (shot put) and the 4x800 relay team.

In other individual events Leah Wellman is No. 13 in the 1,600 run, Kaelee Keller is 14th in the 200 dash, Hunt is 15th in the 300 hurdles, Stephanie Wellman is 15th in the 100 hurdles and Sarah Mescher is 16th in the 100 dash.

The Patriot 4x400 relay team is the No. 11 seed, and the 4x100 relay team seeded 16th.

The South Adams Starfires have three athletes competing today at the Northrop regional in Fort Wayne with Maddie Moore as their top seed.

Moore was the sectional runner-up in the 1,600 run at 5:36.56. She is the No. 10 seed for the regional.

Joining her in competition will be Allison Beitler (13th - 3,200 run) and Kinsey Lengerich (16th - high jump).
