Daniels tosses 3 in Patriot victory (09/17/04)

Jay County Roundup

ANDERSON — A balanced offensive attack and a stifling defensive effort powered the Jay County freshman football team (4-0) to a 27-0 victory over the Anderson Highland Scots Thursday.

Aaron Daniels tossed a trio of touchdown passes in the victory as he racked up 187 yards on 11-of-13 passing.

His first score came after a Chris Moore hit caused a fumble with Justin Mann making the recovery. Daniels led the Patriots on a 10-play drive, finishing it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jobe.

Jobe also caught the two-point conversion pass from Daniels for an 8-0 lead.

Two possessions later Daniels capped another scoring drive, hitting a 35-yard pass to Clint Muhlenkamp for the first of his two scores. Austin May’s extra point put Jay County up 15-0 at halftime.

Anderson Highland was never able to break through the Patriot defense, and Daniels led another 10-play scoring drive in the second half. He tossed his third touchdown pass, an 11-yarder, to Sean Hatzell.

Justin Mann relieved Daniels in the fourth quarter and capped an eight-play drive by completing his only pass attempt to Muhlenkamp for a 2-yard score.

Jay County ran for 133 yards and totaled 322 yards of total offense. Hatzell had 72 receiving yards, and Muhlenkamp followed with 59.

Kyle Cook paced the team with 10 tackles.

NC edges Eagles

NEW CASTLE — The West Jay seventh grade football team came oh so close to its first victory. But it was foiled in the last two minutes.

The Eagles gave up two scores in the final 1:57 in a 12-6 loss to the New Castle Trojans Thursday.

Taylor Farmer gave West Jay (0-2-2) the lead on the final play of the first half. He caught a short pass from Drew Locke, broke a few tackles and outran the defense for an 85-yard score.

The lead stood until the 1:57 mark of the fourth quarter, when New Castle tied it on a 35-yard run. The Trojans then successfully executed an onside kick and marched down the field for the winning score.

The Eagles got fumble recoveries from Michael Masters and Dillon Corn in the defeat.
