On Dean's List

Alyssa Johnson has been named to the spring Dean's List at Taylor University, where she is a sophomore majoring in elementary education and specials education. The daughter of Doug and Carolyn Johnson, Portland, she is a Jay County High School graduate.

Full-time students are named to the Dean's List when they have earned a 3.6 or better grade point average for the term and when at least 12 hours carry credit point values.

Summer reading

There's still time to sign up for the adult summer reading program at Jay County Public Library.

Adults 18 and older may read or listen to audio books between now and July 12. An entry form is filled out for each item finished, making participants eligible for weekly prizes.

The deadline for each weekly drawing is 5 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile at the library, the book-reading group will discuss "The Golden Compass" at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 21. That's the first book in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy.

On Aug. 18, the group will be discussing "Death at LaFenice" by Donna Leon.

Quilt appraisal

The Swiss Stitchers Quilt Guild will be offering quilt appraisals during the annual quilt show held in conjunction with Swiss Days in Berne, which will be on July 24, 25, and 26.

The appraisals will be conducted on Friday, July 25.

Margaret Long, Pittsboro, will be doing the appraisals. She is a certified quilt appraiser and is a member of the American Quilters Society, the Quilters Hall of Fame, and the American Quilt Study Group.

Quilt appraisals are usually done for three reasons: Insurance coverage, fair market value for those interested in selling, and donation value for items which may be presented to a museum or other non-profit. Only the owner of a quilt may request a written appraisal. Written permission from the owner is required if a person other than the owner is seeking an appraisal.

The quilt show will be held at South Adams High School.

It is necessary to schedule a time to have your quilt appraised. To schedule an appraisal, contact Linda McMullen at (260) 368-7795.[[In-content Ad]]
