Delta downs JCHS (09/19/07)
JCHS boys tennis
MUNCIE - The seventh-ranked team in the state proved to be a bit too much, even for the record-breaking Patriots.
Jay County High School's boys tennis team finally saw its winning streak come to an end Tuesday as it lost 5-2 to the No. 7 host Delta Eagles. The Patriots, who set a new school record last week with their 13th regular-season victory, had been perfect since falling to Norwell Aug. 16.
The teams agreed to count every match toward the varsity score Tuesday, playing seven positions instead of the normal five. The two extras came through for Jay County.
Jared Valentine, playing his first varsity match, showed off some stamina. After a close opening two sets, the sophomore dominated the final set for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Brock Haggard at No. 5 singles.
Chase Wellman, a first-year player as a junior, dropped his opening set in a tiebreaker. But he turned the tables on Jordan Green in the third set at No. 4 singles to eke out a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory.
Delta controled the five regular varsity positions, giving up just a total of five games.
Its No. 1s, Zach Ervin and the team of Jeff Price and Spencer Cook, each scored shutouts over Josh Ludy and the team of Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby respectively.
It was just Ludy's second dual-match loss as he fell to 15-3 while the JCHS No. 1 doubles duo fell to 12-6.
At No. 2 singles Phil Powell (12-5) of the Patriots saw his 12-match winning streak halted with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Joseph Taylor. Kyle Simmons (7-6), returning after several matches off because of injury, lost by the same score to Bobby Heifst at No. 3 singles.
Mark Alberson and Adam Horn suffered just their second loss of the season, 6-1, 6-0 to Carl Cardini and Alex Wagner, as they fell to 16-2.[[In-content Ad]]
