Delta forfeits win over Jay

Football roundup

For the first time in more than two decades, the Jay County High School football team is 2-0.
An email Tuesday afternoon informed JCHS principal Phil Ford that the Delta Eagles used an academically ineligible player in their season-opening 55-0 victory over the Patriots. As a result the team must forfeit the game, giving the win to Jay County.
Delta also must forfeit Friday’s 28-23 victory over Carroll for the same reason.
The forfeit, coupled with the Patriots’ 14-13 win Friday over Blackford, leaves the team undefeated through two weeks of the season for the first time since 1988. JCHS was also 2-0 in 1993 but had to forfeit three victories that year, including a 27-21 win over Delta, because of use of an ineligible player.
The Patriots travel to Franklin County (2-0) Friday with a chance to post their first 3-0 start since 1985.

Starfires join top 10
South Adams’ first 2-0 start since 2000 has it ranked among the best teams in the state.
Following the Starfires’ 13-10 victory over Bellmont, a Class 3A school, they were voted as the No. 10 team in the state in Class 1A by The Associated Press in this week’s poll.
SAHS, which has won eight of its last nine games dating back to last season, earned 44 poll points to finish two behind ninth-ranked North Knox. Indianapolis Scecina finished 11th in the voting with 34 points.
Two-time defending state champion Lafayette Central Catholic is the top-ranked team in Class 1A this week, having received every first-place vote in the poll. Pioneer is ranked No. 2.
The Starfires, who reached the sectional championship game after an 0-5 start last season, will try to extend their record to 3-0 Friday when they visit Bluffton.

Arnold honored
South Adams coach Jason Arnold was honored this week as part of the Indianapolis Colts/NFL Coach of the Week program.
Arnold earned honorable mention.
Each week Colts coach Jim Caldwell announces one award winner as well as nine honorable mention recipients. This week’s winner was Floyd McWhirt of Wabash.
Winners receive a certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Colts vice chairman Bill Polian, Colts youth football commissioner Mike Prior and Caldwell. They also receive donations of $1,000 from the NFL Youth Football Fund and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.[[In-content Ad]]
