Delta tops Jay for 10th straight win (02/10/06)

A buzzer-beating 3-pointer would normally bring a home crowd to its feet. But Zac Green’s triple Thursday night was not enough to lift the Patriots.
Jay County led for most of the second half, but gave up a 7-0 run late in the fourth quarter. And the Delta Eagles hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 35 seconds for their 10th straight victory and fifth in a row over the host Patriots.
Delta (14-4) had shot just 6-of-17 from the foul line for the first 31 minutes, but managed to get the job done when the game was on the line. Michael Capstick’s pair of foul shots with 3.5 seconds to go made Green’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the left wing a moot point.
“If you’d have told me tonight we were going to shoot under 50 percent from the free-throw line I’d say we’re not going to be able to win,” said Eagle coach Paul Keller, whose squad has won nine games by five points or fewer this season. “But our kids know how to play in close games. They have total confidence at the end. Once we have a lead, you’re going to really have to do something to beat us because we’re going to spread it out and the kids know how to do it. And then, they tend to make free throws.
“(Capstick) is excellent at the end of the game. He’s a huge reason why we’ve won 10 in a row.”
Capstick keyed the Eagles in the second half, scoring 12 of his game-high 17 points after the break. Seven of those points came in the fourth quarter, and he went 4-of-4 from the foul line in the final minute.
Overall he finished 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line while grabbing four rebounds. Delta outscored the Patriots 11-3 at the free-throw line.
“He’s a gamer. We’ve always known that,” said JCHS coach Craig Teagle of Capstick. “He’s not shot the ball nearly as well this year ... but he’s just a kid who wants the ball in his hands at the end. He’s going to make plays. He’s been like that since he was a freshman. He’s a very impressive player.”
Following a dismal first quarter in which the teams combined to shot 3-of-21 from the field, Jay County (11-5) took a three-point lead at halftime. It fell behind early in the third quarter, then reclaimed the advantage on a pair of buckets by Tyler Rigby and led for the remaineder of the period. But a Capstick 3-pointer to start the fourth period tied the game and set the stage for a dogfight in the final eight minutes.
The Patriots pushed ahead by four points, and Delta came fighting back to tie the game. Then Green scored on a spinning drive to the basket to give the home team a 39-37 advantage with three minutes to go.
But Jay County failed to score over the next two-plus minutes, turning the ball over twice and missing a lay-up. In the meantime Delta went on a 7-0 run keyed by a Ronnie Davenport 3-pointer, and Capstick hit free throws down the stretch to ice it.
The Patriots have struggled mightily against Delta recently, with their last win against the near-by rival coming during the 2001-02 regular season. That Eagle team went on to win the Class 3A state title.
“They’ve just had our number the last three or four years,” said Teagle, whose team had won four straight over Delta before the current skid. “When I first got here we had their number and it’s just flip-flopped.
“What’s really disappointing about it is how hard we battled and how hard our kids played. We’re frustrated as a team right now because it’s been since Jan. 6 since we’ve played together and practiced together as a whole team.
“Until we get everybody back together, our chemistry isn’t going to be very good.”
Seniors Randy Evans and John Retter were on the bench for the first half Thursday and played sparingly in the second after each missed a couple of practices this week. Evans, Retter and Rigby have all missed action because of illnesses and injuries over the last month as the Patriots have lost three of their last five after a 9-2 start.
Rigby and Green each scored 11 points to lead the Patriots. Rigby also had five assists, and Corey Comer grabbed nine rebounds.
Davenport and Andy Kennedy joined Capstick in double figures for Delta with 11 and 10 points respectively. Davenport and Kennedy each grabbed six rebounds.

Jay County dominated the first half and managed to hang on for a 52-46 victory over the Eagles.
The Patriots rolled out to a 21-6 lead after the opening quarter and were ahead by 18 at the half. Delta hit six second-half 3-pointers and pulled to within five points in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback.
Rhett Retter and Heath Rigby paced Jay County with 12 points apiece, with 19 of their combined 24 coming in the first half. Adam Garringer added eight points.
Zach Ervin and Brady Young scored all of their 12 and nine points respectively for the Eagles on 3-pointers.[[In-content Ad]]
