Denney shoots 101 for Patriots

YORKTOWN - Abby Denney came through with another solid score. The rest of the Patriots had a bit of a difficult day at The Players Club.
Jay County, led by Denney's 101, finished with a score of 494 to place last Thursday in the nine-team Muncie Central Invitational. They were one stroke behind eighth-place New Castle.
Richmond won the tournament at 319, and runner-up Yorktown's Kennedy Windlan was the medalist with an even-par 72.
Denney was more than 20 strokes better than the rest of her Patriots teammates as she recorded half of the team's pars and six of its seven bogeys. She played even on the 335-yard, par-4 11th hole and the 308-yard, par-4 18th. Five of her six bogeys came on the front nine.
Through the first week of the season, the junior is averaging 49.4 strokes per nine holes, more than a stroke better than last year.
Brittany Stevens followed Denney with a 123. She parred the 295-yard, par-4 17th hole.
Whitney Gray added a par on the 77-yard, par-3 seventh hole en route to a 125. Alysia Fennig, a freshman playing in her first tournament, carded a 145 to complete the team score.
Cortney Myers added a 167.
Rockets win opener
CINCINNATI - The Portland Rockets kicked off the National Amateur Baseball Federation tournament with a 7-0 win Thursday over Yorkville.
Ethan Tribolet tossed a two-hit shutout to give the Rockets their 32nd victory of the year.
Kris Gottschall and Bryan Brudi keyed the Portland offense, starting with Gottschall's single in the second inning.
Riley Muhlenkamp added a single, and Brudi's sacrifice fly brought Gottschall to the plate for a 1-0 lead.
The duo got together again in the fourth inning when Gottschall doubled and Brudi drove him in with a single. Both players finished with two hits.
The Rockets, who play today at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., added three more runs in the fifth as they pulled away.[[In-content Ad]]
