Denney wins at Hagerstown

Local roundup

HAGERSTOWN — No one played better than Abby Denney on Tuesday.
The Jay County High School senior racked up 10 pars and a birdie, matching the host Tigers’ Jilly Quillen for the best score of 83 at the Hagerstown Invitational. She claimed first place thanks to her par on the 296-yard, par-4 18th hole at Hartley Hills Country Club by way of the back-up tiebreaker system.
Denney’s effort led the Patriots to their best score of the season by far — 382 — and a second-place finish. Hagerstown took the top spot in the eight-team field with a 366, and Knightstown was third at 406.
Jay County’s previous 18-hole scores this year were 440 at the Richmond Invitational, 430 at the Muncie Central Invitational and 421 at the Marion Invitational.
Denney, who was the runner-up at the Monroe Central Invitational, was on fire on the front nine as she parred each of the first four holes and each of the final three. She added four more pars on the back nine as well as a birdie on the 408-yard, par-5 15th hole.
Fellow senior Macey Gerber also turned in a birdie on the 15th hole, and had a par on the 281-yard, par-4 fourth. She added 11 bogeys on the way to a 94.
Brittany Stevens gave the Patriots a third birdie on the 171-yard, par-3 seventh hole on the way to recording a career-best 18-hole total. She also had four pars and five bogeys to shoot 99.
Alysia Fennig had one par in her round as she completed the team score with a 106. Whitney Gray finished at 115.

Burkett was second by a stroke after the first 18 holes of competition in the championship flight, but shot a 2-over-par 72 on the second day to claim the title. He edged runner-up Scott Rines by a single stroke.
Coldren cruised in the women’s event, winning by 11 strokes with an 88. She was the only player to break 50 on both the front nine and the back nine.
Winners of the men’s first, second and third flights respectively were Curt Compton (154), Fred DeHoff (165) and Chris Hearn (175).
