Diabetes program set (11/15/03)
Business Roundup
The Jay County Hospital is implementing a certified diabetes education program that will incorporate the services of a nurse educator, registered dietitian and pharmacist.
The program is approved by the American Diabetes Association and is a comprehensive approach to improving health care for the area’s diabetic citizens.
Statistical data shows that a high percentage of Jay County’s population has been diagnosed with diabetes, according to a JCH community needs assessment conducted earlier this year.
The comprehensive 10-hour course, including a follow-up, will consist of small group instruction as well as one-on-one sessions. The goals of the program are to promote an understanding of the disease process and dietary management, to enable clients in diabetes self care, to aid in preventing complications which lead to further morbidity and mortality, to foster effective public awareness of diabetes mellitus and to extend the continuity of care necessary to provide competent management at home.
Because the certified diabetes education program is an essential element of the daily health care of a diabetes patient, many insurance companies — including Medicare — cover the cost of the course.
Anyone interested in learning more about the class may contact the Specialty Referral Clinic of Jay County Hospital at (260) 726-1814.
