A discussion group for the book "Icy Sparks" by Gwyn Hyman Rubio will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Jay County Public Library.

The Jay County Public Library will have an after school special on Friday from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
A snack will be provided, a story shared and a Halloween craft will be made.

Story times will be held on Monday, Oct. 6, 13 and 20 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 7, 14 and 21 at 1 p.m. Four or five books will be read aloud, followed by a craft.
Depression program
The program "Signs of Depression" will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. at Jay County Public Library.
The program will be presented by Janet Stafford, Purdue Extension educator. She will discuss how to recognize and identify depression.
Reservations are due by Oct. 2 and can be made by calling (260) 726-4707.
Volunteer orientation
State of the Heart Hospice will have a volunteer orientation on Friday, Oct. 10, at the office at 410 W. Votaw St. in Portland.
Hospice volunteer coordinator Pauline Faller will discuss the hospice philosophy and the services it provides.
The orientation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and lunch will be served.

Wray chosen
Phil Wray was chosen as the 2009 District VI Superintendent of the Year by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.
Wray was chosen for his service to Randolph Central School Corporation, where he was superintendent from 1995 until 2008.
Wray is now superintendent of the Union School Corporation.
Quilt show
Muncie Quilters Guild will present the show "Quilts from the Heartland" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Heartland Hall at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Muncie.
Show hours are Friday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is $5 and children 12 and younger are free. Profits will be donated to Ball Memorial Hospital to pay for mammograms.
