East Jay Middle School hosted a double feature Tuesday night with sixth grade girls basketball in one gym and wrestling in the other. It came away with a split result: The girls basketball team topped the Yorktown Tigers 42-14 while the wrestlers suffered a 45-39 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
Yorktown was the first opponent to score in double figures agianst the Chiefs all season, but the home team still cruised to 7-0.
Kassie Hemmelgarn carried East Jay to its 28-point victory with game highs of 11 points and seven assists.[[In-content Ad]]points and seven rebounds as every player scored.
Maria Murphy had 12 points and eight rebounds as the B team slipped to 4-1 with a 34-17 loss to Yorktown.
The wrestling match was a tight one throughout, and the Chiefs pulled even late. But they had to take a forfeit in the heavyweight division, handing Coldwater its margin of victory.
East Jay defeated the Monroe Central Golden Bears 51-39 Monday. Scoring wins in that match for the Chiefs were Matt Segraves (80), Zac Somers (90), Heng Hong (95), Dyllan Derrickson (110), D.J. Teeple (115), Zadrian Hardwick (120), Nick Stephens (145), Alan Spahr (152) and Jake Boyer (175).
