Taking Note
Caitlin Dunn, a student at Jay County High school, was one of a select group of students who attended the Molecular Medicine in Action (MMIA) program at Indiana University School of Medicine on March 12 and 13.
This year 50 of Indiana’s best high school science students were selected from about 220 applicants for the program, during which they worked alongside top research scientists learning hands-on laboratory techniques used in modern biomedical research.
Caitlin and the other students in this year’s program isolated DNA in test tubes, stained chromosomes in order to identify mutations, learned about issues in bioethics, and practiced techniques for inserting genes into cells, among other activities.
Cruise-in
A cruise-in will be held Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. on the streets of Fort Recovery, rain or shine. Two $500 scholarships will be given to students pursuing automotive careers.
Cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome and dash plaques and awards will be given.
The event is sponsored by the Fort Street Car Classics and the Fort Recovery Merchants.
Students to perform
Students from the Arts Place MusicWorks program will perform in the annual spring recitals on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, at Arts Place.
All recitals will take place in Hall-Moser Theatre and are free and open to the public.
Ensembles will perform in concert on Friday at 7 p.m. and individual students will take the stage on Saturday. String and guitar students will perform during the first recital at 10 a.m. Saturday and voice and piano students will perform at 12:30 p.m. The final recital will consist of woodwind, brass, and percussion students performing at 3 p.m.

The Jay County 4-H Share-the-fun Contest was held recently with 10 acts competing in this year’s event.
Winners in the curtain act-musical were: Hannah Lugar, Green Hoosier Pals, first place with a vocal solo; Trinity Whetstone, Wabash Cannonballs, second place with a violin solo; and Brandy Phelps and Erica Reynolds, Jefferson Patriots, third place with a duo event.
Curtain act, non-musical winners were: Megan Taylor, Jessica Quinn, Kandi Ervin and Sara Ninde, Jefferson Patriots, first place with “Funky Music”; Elyse and Trinity Whetstone, Wabash Cannonballs, second place with, “Sisters”; and Hailey Lennartz, Heather Lugar, Hope Lugar, and Laurann Schoenlein, Greene Hoosier Pals, third place with, “We Are In This Together.”
Group act winners were: Greene Hoosier Pals, first place with “The Streak”; Jefferson Patriots, second place with “Where’s The Egg?”; Greene Hoosier Pals, third with “Arlington”; and Pike Rebels, fourth with “Wipe Out Surfin’ USA.”
To host teleconference
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Indiana will host a teleconference about “Caregiving in the Home.”
Dr. Carla Chase, assistant faculty for the School of Occupational Therapy at the University of Indianapolis, will discuss caregiving in the home including activities and safety issues for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.
Participants in this teleconference will have the opportunity to ask specific questions following the presentation.
The teleconference will be held Monday, May 15, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants need to register by calling 1-800-272-3900 prior to the teleconference. Upon registering, individuals will be given a toll-free number to use the evening of the program and mailed supplemental materials to use during the program.
There is no charge to participate in this program, however, registration is required to receive the access information.
May library activities
Toddler activity time will be held May 18, at 9:30 a.m. at the Jay County Public Library. Infants and toddlers are welcome to attend with a caregiver. Older siblings may attend, but activities will be toddler-oriented. No registration is necessary.
Also, an after school special will be held Friday, May 19, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and registration is required and limited to the first 20 children.

Campers sought
The Indiana state Police is giving young people an up-close look at law enforcement through its youth camps program.
The three-day Respect for Law camp offers a look at law enforcement for students entering fifth and sixth grades.
Police officers staff the co-ed camps and programs include demonstrations by emergency response teams, bomb squads, underwater search and rescue teams and police dogs.
Campers participate in recreational activities, make new friends and go home with a new respect for themselves and others.
The camp costs $75 and will be held at University of Southern Indiana, June 8 through 10; Hanover College, June 15 through 17; Vincennes University, June 15 through 17; Anderson University, July 13 trough 15; Notre Dame University, July 27 through 29; and University of Indianapolis, July 27 through 29.
Scholarships are available to all camps.

Nominations are being accepted to honor those who have gone the extra mile to help seniors and disabled individuals in East Central Indiana and for the Older Hoosier of the Year and Senior Volunteer of the Years.
The recipients will be honored during LifeStream Services Awards of Excellence Celebration and annual meeting June 28, at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie.
Nominations are due by May 19 for the chairman’s award, champion award, focus award, older Hoosier of the Year, and senior volunteer of the year.

The law firm of Bose McKinney and Evans LLP announces that applications are available for the annual Lewis C. Bose Scholarship for Educational Leadership.
The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to an Indiana educator who has been accepted into and will attend an advanced degree program for education administration in 2007. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the applicant’s past academic and professional achievements, future goals, potential for leadership, and financial need. Educators from all 92 counties in Indiana are invited to apply.
