Eagle 8th graders win championship (01/26/04)

West Jay’s girls basketball teams just missed winning two championships as they hosted the West Jay Invitational Saturday.
The eighth grade team picked up two big wins, defeating Montpelier 32-6 and Hartford City 49-32 to take the tournament title.
The seventh grade team topped Montpelier 35-8 in the first round, but dropped a 34-33 decision to Hartford City in the championship game.
The Eagles eighth graders never gave Montpelier a chance, taking a 9-0 lead after one quarter and playing stifling defense throughout.
Brittany O’Dell paced West Jay in that contest with 13 points. Trish Champ had five points, and Brianna Blanton notched four.
West Jay trailed in the finale against Hartford City by a 16-7 score after the first quarter. But, the Eagles outscored Hartford City 16-2 in the second quarter and never trailed again.
Champ led West Jay (10-1) to the title with 20 points. O’Dell followed with nine.
Miranda Peterson had seven points, Blanton scored six and Josie Bumbalough put in five.

Chelsea Grady had 12 points for West Jay against Montpelier, and Kelci Reed added seven.
