Eagle gridders crush Westside (09/26/07)

UNION CITY - The Eagles are perfect. And no one has really come close to stopping them.

West Jay's seventh grade football team pushed its undefeated streak to five games Tuesday night with a 29-6 trouncing of Union City Westside. The Eagles have won each of their games by at least two touchdowns.

A variety of WJMS players got in on the scoring act against Westside, with Luke Wiemer contributing the longest with an 85-yard touchdown run. Blake Crouch scored on a 35-yard run, and Dustin Tighe caught a 35-yard TD pass from Tyler Back.

Jacob Harter added a 2-yard run, and Back ran for one 2-point conversion and caught another from Crouch.

Tuesday's eighth-grade game was canceled.

Chief teams to 6-3

The East Jay seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams each improved to 6-3 Tuesday with victories over Union City Westside.

The Chief seventh graders won 25-15, 25-12, and the eighth grade squad also won in two games. East Jay's sixth graders also won, 25-8, 25-6.

Hannah Ainsworth powered the Chief seventh grade team with 12 aces and six assists, and Avery Loyd had four kills. Emily Devoe, Gabbie Cross and Rachelle Jackson each had two kills, and Paige Lennartz and Jill Dirksen added two digs apiece.

Whitney Somers led the eighth grade victory with five points and six kills. Mariah Hornaday and Maria Murphy also had three kills, Jennifer Dirksen came up with eight digs, Danielle Wellman scored seven points and Alyssa Rigby put up six assists.

Katie Aker's three points led the sixth grade team. Rachelle Boolman, Ali Inman, Kaitlin Petro and Erica Reynolds each added two.

The EJMS sixth graders also played Monday, with the A team falling 25-13, 25-18 and the B team losing 25-8, 25-18 to Selma. Aker led the way with six points, and Abby Dunlavy scored five.

West Jay seventh wins

DUNKIRK - Chelsea Tighe led the West Jay seventh grade volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-23 victory Tuesday over the Southern Wells Raiders. The Eagle eighth grade team lost, 25-21, 15-25, 15-11.

Tighe's 10 points were a team-high for the seventh graders. Shamber Knight added five points, and Shelby Shirk scored four.

Danielle Newsome racked up 14 points, including seven in the opening game for the WJMS eighth graders (4-4). Melinda Penrod finished with five points.

Indian 8th defeats DSJ

DELPHOS, Ohio - Fort Recovery's eighth grade volleyball team stayed above .500 Tuesday thanks to a 25-20, 25-16 victory over the St. John's Blue Jays. The seventh grade team lost 25-15, 26-24.

Kylie Kahlig paced the eighth graders (6-4) with seven kills, six points and a block. Katelyn Jutte scored eight points, Ericka Lennartz followed with seven points and Olivia Schwieterman had seven assists.

Elizabeth Wendel scored three points for the seventh grade team, which fell to 6-4. Chelsea Pottkotter, Janelle Schwieterman and Heather Vaughn each scored two points.[[In-content Ad]]
