Eagle gridders top Salamonie (10/10/05)

WARREN — West Jay came up with a pair of victories Saturday as its seventh grade football team trounced Salamonie 32-0 while the eighth graders scored a 14-7 win.

Zach Cash and Kyler Maxwell each had a couple of touchdowns for the seventh grade Eagles (2-5). Cash opened the scoring with a 50-yard run in the first quarter, and Maxwell added a 4-yard run.

Cash rushed for another long score in the second quarter on a 40-yard run, and Maxwell reached the end zone on a 65-yard run in the third quarter.

Cash capped the scoring when he hit Anthony Skeens with a 15-yard touchdown pass in the final period.

West Jay got its only two-point conversion of the game following the Skeens score as Cash passed to Dakota Steed.

Cody Nelson and Ryan Miskinis each picked up fumble recoveries.

The eighth grade team improved to 3-3 as it scored both of its touchdowns on long pass plays in the first half.

Michael Daniels tossed for the first score, hitting John Pettus with a 45-yard pass in the first quarter.

Drew Locke then found Michael Daniels on a 60-yard touchdown pass in the second period.

After missing the conversion try on the first score, the Eagles followed the 60-yard pass from Locke to Daniels with a two-point run from Josh Beaty.

Indians finish fourth

ROCKFORD, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman volleyball team won its opening match, but lost the next two to finish in fourth place at the Parkway Invitational Saturday.

The Indians dominated the third game to beat Van Wert 25-8, 17-25, 15-3 in their opener. However, they followed with losses of 25-21, 25-22 to St. Henry and 25-18, 25-20 to Marion Local to drop to 6-6 on the year.

Annie Koesters led the Tribe to its lone win as she had a team-best four kills and one block against Van Wert. She was also second on the team with 12 points.

Kelly Sudhoff scored 15 points, and Kelsey Wuebker had three kills.

Koesters added eight kills and four blocks against St. Henry, and she had seven kills versus Marion Local.

Sudhoff finished the tournament with 22 points, and Klenke had five kills.

Flyers down Tribe

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians finally got on the board in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough. Fort Recovery’s junior varsity football team fell to a 27-8 defeat against the Marion Local Flyers Saturday.

Marion Local scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns and led 27-0 after three quarters.

Bobby Rammel connected with Wes Kahlig for a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Indians’ only score. Matt Braun ran in for the two-point conversion.[[In-content Ad]]
