Eagles blank Jay in opener
JCHS softball
MUNCIE - It wasn't the kind of start the Patriots were hoping for.
Jay County High School's softball team's opening game lasted just five innings with the Patriots falling 10-0 to the host Delta Eagles.
Delta (3-0), which lost 7-6 to JCHS last season, scored eight times in the first two innings to take command. Single tallies in the third and fifth innings ended the game early.
Brittney Watson took the loss, giving up 10 runs - six earned - on 10 hits and a walk. She struck out one batter.
Danielle Wellman, who hit .500 last season as a freshman, went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss. Kendra Younger, Nikka Chaney and Watson each added a single.
Junior varsity
The Eagles scored 10 times in the fourth inning on the way to a 19-1, five-inning victory over Jay County.
Only two of Delta's runs were earned as the Patriots struggled with errors. Abbey Vance took the loss, giving up eight hits and a walk.
Randa Gillespie went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in Tasha McCowan for Jay County's only run. Taylor Franklin also had a single.[[In-content Ad]]
