Eagles knock off Jay County

Local roundup

After a run of six straight victories, the Patriots will enter tournament play having lost three of their last four.
The Jay County High School boys soccer team dropped its final game of the regular season Saturday 1-0 to the visiting Oak Hill Golden Eagles.
Oak Hill recorded the lone goal of the game in the first half, with Gerritt Taylor scoring on an assist from Jake Evans. Taylor, a sophomore, led the Golden Eagles (12-2-2) with six shots, and Evans was second with five.
Austin Cowan made eight saves for the Patriots, who are 8-5-3 and will play Muncie Southside sectional semifinal action at Muncie Central Tuesday at 5 p.m. They defeated Southside 7-3 on Sept. 26.
Each of Jay County’s three late-season losses came by shutout — 6-0 to Marion, 3-0 to Liberty Christian and 1-0 to Oak Hill.

Fort spikers 0-3
CONVOY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s volleyball team slipped to 4-13 Saturday as it dropped all three of its matches at the PEPSI Lady Knight Invitational hosted by Crestview.
Ericka Lennartz led the Indians in their closest match of the day, a 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 loss to Old Fort. She had 18 digs and 10 kills, and Kayla Kahlig added 19 assists and seven service points.
Kahlig also totaled 13 assists and five service points for the Tribe in its 25-17, 25-19 loss to Edison. Abby Backs finished with 13 digs and three service points in Fort Recovery’s 25-11, 25-12 loss to Celina.

SA soccer falls
NORTH MANCHESTER — The South Adams soccer teams had a difficult day as they visited the Manchester Squires. The boys squad suffered an 8-1 loss while the girls were shut out 6-0.
John O’Donnell turned in the only goal of the day for South Adams as the boys team avoided a shutout after falling behind 8-0. He scored off an assist from fellow sophomore Dustin Dellinger.
L.J. Moser finished with 20 saves for the Starfires (2-13) in the defeat.
Michaela Rupp and Rachel Simon each finished with two shots for the SAHS girls (4-10) against Manchester, which pulled away with four goals in the second half. Alaina Johnston made 10 saves, and Jordan Brown added one.

JC tennis finished
While Chance Fuller and Landry Inman did fight their way to a three-set victory Friday, the Jay County duo’s season will not continue.
Friday’s edition of The Commercial Review noted that Fuller and Inman would advance in the doubles portion of the state tournament thanks to their 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory Friday over Ryan Hester and Charlie Webster of Northeastern in team tournament hosted by JCHS.
No. 1 singles and doubles players who finish undefeated in team sectional action can advance in the “individual” tournament even if their team is eliminated. However, teams must have played at least half of their regular-season matches together in order to qualify.
Fuller and Inman played just five of the Patriots’ 15 regular-season matches together at No. 1 doubles, and therefore are not eligible to advance in tournament play.

Minnich places 15th
CARMEL — Emi Minnich led the East Jay Middle School girls cross country team to its best-ever finish at the Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championship.
The Chief girls placed eighth out of 27 teams. The boys team did not have enough runners for a team score.
Minnich led the way for East Jay as she crossed the finish line in 11 minutes, 59 seconds. She took 15th place, which earned her all-state medalist honors.
Megan Wellman was 38th in 12:27 followed by Sophie Bader (77th – 13:01), Erika Kunkler (80th – 13:05) and Jamie Valentine (105th – 13:22).

Cole Stigleman was the top performer Saturday in Jay County Pee Wee Football.
Stigleman’s three touchdowns led the Giants to a 22-8 victory over the Hawks.
Gabe Link scored all of the points in the Vikings’ 14-0 victory over the Steelers, and Noah Hummel had two touchdowns as the Colts defeated the Falcons 34-0. Bailey Cox had the lone TD in the Dolphins’ 8-0 win over the Chiefs, and the defense came up big for the Bears as they beat the Bengals 2-0.
