PORTLAND — Jay County played what was likely its worst game of the year, especially in the first half. Still it had two chances — well, maybe one-and-a-half — to win the game on its final possession.

Heath Williams’ shot in the lane was off the mark and a final desperation inbound play with 0.3 seconds on the clock also failed as the Patriot boys basketball team dropped a 41-40 decision to the Delta Eagles Thursday.

Jay County nearly overcame a horrendous first half in which it turned the ball over 11 times, two below its season average for an entire game.

“Our energy, our mental focus, it just wasn’t there,” said Patriot coach Craig Teagle, who watched his team lose its second straight at home after opening with six consecutive wins. “I felt like we were a step slow tonight. We didn’t react to anything.

“You just can’t play for three quarters like that and expect to win.”

Since beating the eventual state champion Delta team during the regular season in 2002 the Patriots have fallen apart against one of their biggest rivals. Jay County has combined for just 75 points in its last two contests against the Eagles while shooting 34 percent, including 19 percent from 3-point range.

The Patriots will try to get off their current two-game skid when they host Anderson Highland Saturday at 1 p.m.

Delta coach Paul Keller said he felt his team was lucky to come away with a victory Thursday as it experienced some serious free throw shooting struggles. The Eagles (11-5) finished just 3-of-11 from the line.

“I wasn’t very pretty,” he said. “I told the kids you don’t deserve a varsity win shooting 3-of-11. It’s a good sign that we didn’t play very well and were still able to get the win.”

Jeff Adams gave his team the winning hoop with nine seconds to play.

The 6-foot-4 Delta center backed down Corey Comer in the post and scored for a 41-40 Eagle lead. Jay County took a timeout with nine seconds to play.

On the ensuing possession Heath Williams blasted up the floor to set up a clear-out play. He dribbled to the left wing and spun into the lane, but missed a tough jumper from about 13 feet.

The ball was knocked out of bounds, and the officials ruled there were 0.3 seconds remaining. Williams tried to find Mark Kelly on an alley-oop style pass for a tip-in, but the lob sailed too high and time expired.

“You leave it in your senior’s hands to make a decision,” said Teagle of the final possession. “(Williams) pulled up and got a decent look. Their kid did a great job of getting a hand up and batting (the rebound) out of bounds.”

The Eagles’ game-winning bucket came after senior Dustin Overton missed a pair of foul shots with 26 seconds left which could have given the Patriots (7-7) a three-point lead. Adams finished with 15 points and five rebounds, both team highs for Delta.

Colby Brand scored nine points, Bryce Bow had eight and Michael Capstick added seven. Andy Kennedy matched Adams with five boards.

“Jeff (Adams) is a strong kid,” said Keller. “We’ve built a lot of our offense around him. I told him, ‘I don’t care how many you miss, you’ve got to keep plugging away.’”

Jay County also had just one player in double figures with Trent Bailey scoring 19 points. Comer finished with eight points, and Overton scored all of his seven points in the first half.

Overton and Comer each finished with six rebounds. Kelly had five boards, and Williams finished with four assists.

Jay County fell behind 29-21 early in the second half, but rallied as it held the Eagles scoreless for more than four minutes. Andy Pinkerton, Bailey and Comer each scored for a 7-0 run to pull the Patriots within one.

They tied the game on with 5:19 to play in the game on a pair of Bailey free throws and it was a nail-biter from their.

Delta pulled ahead on a 3-point play by Bow, but the junior missed his next two foul shots. Comer responded by hitting a pair with 52 seconds left, putting Jay County ahead 40-39.

The Eagles failed on their next chance down the floor, but Overton followed by missing his free throws and Adams converted the game-winner.

The Patriots trailed 23-19 at halftime, thanks mostly to their host of turnovers.

“What’s disappointing about that is those were unforced,” said Teagle. “They weren’t putting pressure on us or anything. Those were all passes to the post or the wing that weren’t there.”

Junior varsity

Jay County fell to a big deficit before nearly pulling off a fourth-quarter comeback in a 33-29 loss to Delta.

The Patriots trailed 28-15 after three quarters as they were outscored 11-3 in the third. However, they came all the way back, with Randy Evans drilling what could have been a game-tying 3-pointer with 11 seconds left.

But, the 3-point shot was waved off as Tyler Dunnington was called for an offensive foul Cody Young went to the other end and made two free throws to seal the win for the Eagles.

Jon Retter paced Jay County with nine points. Zac Green and Dunnington each added seven.

Young notched a game-high 10 points for Delta. Tyler Ridge followed with eight.[[In-content Ad]]
