Eagles upset 18th-ranked Jay County gymnasts (02/08/05)

MUNCIE — And all of a sudden, the Patriots have a challenger.

Since prior to the season the Jay County gymnastics team has been considered a heavy favorite to win a third straight sectional championship. The Delta Eagles tossed that idea out the window Monday, handing the Patriots their first dual-meet loss by a 99.4-98.5 final.

It was the lowest score since December for the Patriots, who were tied for 18th with Fort Wayne Concordia in this week’s Indiana High School Gymnastics Coaches Association state poll.

Led by Kelli Criswell and Emily Carter, the Eagles outscored Jay County on both the vault and the uneven parallel bars and stayed close enough in the other two events to score the upset and set up a sectional showdown next month.

Criswell matched the Patriots’ Hannah Williams for the first-place all-around score of 34.5, leading her team in three of the four events. She won the Vault with an 8.85, and the bars with an 8.7.

Williams responded with top scores of 9.15 on the balance beam and 9.1 on the floor exercise. She also paced Jay County with a third-place 8.6 on the vault and had the No. 3 team score on the bars with a 7.65.

Delta earned the second-place score in every event, with three of those coming from Carter.

Lacey Thornburg was first for the Patriots and third overall with a 7.95 on the bars, and Kristen Brown added a third-place 8.2 behind Williams on the floor.

Melissa Fifer was second on the team on both vault and beam with scores of 8.45 and 7.95 respectively. Lacey Grider followed her in both of those events with scores of 8.0 and 7.9.

Erika Hunt scored a 7.8 on the floor, and Makenzie Knight had a 7.75 on the bars.

Jay County won every junior varsity event to total 80.85 points. Delta did not have enough gymnasts for a JV team score.

Sarah Ullom posted the top Patriot JV score with a winning 7.9 on the vault. Fifer had a 7.45 to win the floor, Brown took the beam with a 6.87 and Grider was first on the bars with a 6.5.[[In-content Ad]]
