The Portland Wal-Mart awarded East Elementary School a $500 grant in honor of Earth Day.

The school, located at 705 Tallman St. in Portland, plans to use the money to beautify the front of the school, with hopes of seeing wildlife and birds in the area.

Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB gave nearly $2 million to schools and conservation clubs across the country on Thursday for environmental or beautification initiatives.

BREAKFAST SERVED

The Key Palace Theatre in Redkey is now serving breakfast at what business owners boast as “Jay County’s Most Unique Restaurant.”

A menu of bacon, eggs, pancakes, Texas toast, sausage and other items will be served from 6 to 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The Key Palace is located at 123 S. Meridian St.

IPR STAFF HONORED

Indiana Public Radio News had five winners in the 2003 Network Indiana News Contest on April 19.

The big winners were Brian Beaver, Indiana Public Radio senior news correspondent, who won three awards, and Marcus Jackman, IPR’s local host for NPR’s “All Things Considered” and the host/correspondent for “Indiana ArtsDesk,” received one award.

Jackman and the IPR News Team also walked away with one award.

Network Indiana is a news, sports and talk radio network which provides statewide coverage to a variety of Indiana radio stations.

IPR broadcasts in Portland on WBSJ 91.7 FM.

REACHES MILESTONE

Briner Building Inc., a general contracting company of Bluffton, has reached the $25 million sale level with the building division of Butler Manufacturing Company, the world leader in the development and manufacture of metal building systems.

President of Briner Building Mike Swinford received the award from Ted Wolfe, senior vice president of sales, and Steve Shearer, vice president of corporate accounts, at Butler’s 2004 National Sales meeting.

Briner recently completed projects including James Dean Gallary, Gas City; Red Gold, Elwood; Advanced Seal, Bryant; and Fortco Plastics, Portland Fire Department, Jay Community Center, all of Portland.

Briner Building, Inc. was established in 1969 and has been marketing and building Butler buildings since 1987.

The company also was named High Performance Builder by the Buildings Division of Butler Manufacturing Company, at Butler’s 2004 national sales meeting.

This award is given to Butler Builders who meet or exceed annual trade area goals and demonstrate superior marketing skills in the sale of Butler building and roof systems.

Only 130 of these awards were presented nationally from more than 1,200 builders.

COMPLETES COURSE

Mary Lynn Meyer, a registered nurse at Bluffton Regional Business Health Services, has successfully completed the required course to become a certified occupational hearing conservationist.

This five-year certification allows Meyer to conduct hearing tests for occupational workers.

The Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation is a non-profit organization whose mission is promoting the conservation of hearing by enhancing the quality of occupational hearing conservation programs.

Meyer’s affiliation allows her to remain up-to-date with programs and occupational hearing standards.

JOINS BRUNS STAFF

Eric Muhlenkamp, P.E. recently joined the Bruns Building staff. Muhlenkamp will serve as project manager and estimator on industrial and commercial projects for the firm.

Muhlen-kamp received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Ohio State University and has been a registered Ohio Professional Engineer since 2000. He has 11 years experience in the construction and engineering fields.

Muhlenkamp is working out of the company’s rural St. Henry office. He also resides in St. Henry with his wife and three children.

Bruns Building and Development is a member of Bruns Construction Enterprises. The main office is located on Cranberry Road in rural St. Henry, with additional offices in Tipp City and Van Wert, Ohio.

ACCREDITATION

Bluffton Regional Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging.

The hospital received the accreditation as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology. Only facilities achieving high practice standards can be given this award.

Bluffton Regional’s digital mammography, analog mammography and ultrasound services also are ACR accredited.

CERTIFICATION EARNED

The chief operating officer of Bluffton Regional Medical Center has earned board certification in health care management.

Vicki Hanselman was recognized by the American College of Healthcare Executives at the annual convocation ceremony on Feb. 29.

To earn board certification, Hanselman had to complete a comprehensive exam covering subjects related to health care management. She also had to demonstrate that she would be continuing her education and professional experience, as well as participating in community activities.

Hanselman has been Bluffton Regional’s chief operating officer since July 2002.

FREE SEMINAR

Romary Financial Services Inc., a financial advisory firm of Fort Wayne, will conduct a free financial planning seminar for women on Wednesday, May 19.

The seminar, which will be conducted by Deb Romary, founder and president of the financial advisory firm, will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Walb Union Ballroom on the IPFW campus in Fort Wayne.

The theme of the seminar is entitled, “Circle of Stones” and will address the need of today’s women for long-term strategic financial planning. Romary also will address how to apply financial management techniques with hopes of creating a more stabilized future.

Dinner will be served, and the Women’s Drumming Circle will perform.

COURSES CONDUCTED

Ohio and Indiana Roofing of St. Henry, Ohio recently conducted seminars for the Drug Free Workplace Program and certification courses in CPR and first aid.

New associates participated in equipment safety certification, which involves courses on the operation and safety of scissors lifts, manlifts and forklifts.

Ohio and Indiana Roofing Co., which is a roofing contractor for commercial, industrial and public facilities, conducts annual training for these areas as well as other training programs throughout the year.

PROFIT JUMP

First quarter profit jumped 21 percent for RadioShack Corporation, thanks largely to brisk sales of wireless products and services, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.

The consumer-electronics retailer posted net income of $68.3 million, or 41 cents a share, up from $56.6 million, or 33 cents a share, a year earlier.

Sales rose 2.1 percent to $1.09 billion, and sales at stores open for more than a year increased 3 percent.

Wireless communication products sales increased 28 percent.

COKE VACANCY

Key directors of Coca-Cola Co. met last week with Gillette Co.’s chairman and chief executive, James Kilts, in hopes that he would fill the vacant chairman and CEO position at the soft drink company, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.

Although more meetings are planned with Kilts, those close to the search reminded the directors to still consider other candidates.

Vice chairman and president of global market development and business operations of Proctor & Gamble Co., R. Kerry Clark and chairman and CEO of Mattel Inc., Robert Eckert are still in the running. Also interested in the position is Coke’s president and chief operating officer, Steven J. Heyer.

Chairman and CEO of Kellogg Co., Carlos Gutierrez has turned down the position.

Coke announced in February that Douglas Daft would retire as Coke’s CEO and chairman during 2004 and that it would conduct an outside search for his successor.

AGREEMENT REACHED

Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless Services Inc. were expected to announce an agreement on Monday for the use of Wi-Fi “hot spots” in airports.

The roaming agreement for the use of each other’s wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) would provide wireless Internet access at very high speeds in airports, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.

The agreement would only apply to a small number of hot spots that each carrier provides. Sprint PCS customers will have access to AT&T Wireless hot spots at airports in Denver, Philadelphia and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. AT&T Wireless customers will be able to access Sprint’s hot spots in Kansas City, Mo. and Salt Lake City.

In February, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile USA Inc., signed a similar agreement.[[In-content Ad]]
