East Elementary student wins contest
Taking Note
Students from East Elementary recently competed in the Optimist Oratorical Contest with the theme “If I Were the Leader of the Free World, the First Issue I Would Address Would Be…”
First place in the girls’ division was Maggie Pryor, a fourth grade student. She is the daughter of Holly and Shane Pryor.
First place in the boys’ division was Noah Hummel, a fifth grade student. He is the son of Gene and Jennifer Hummel.
Runners up were Lauren Lucas, fourth grade, the daughter of Stephanie Reynolds and Stephen Lucas, and Joe Hilty, fourth grade, the son of Lana and Melvin Hilty.
Ohio Has Talent
A Fort Recovery man will compete in the fourth annual Ohio Has Talent show to be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. at Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Van Wert, Ohio.
The show is mimicked from the popular television series America’s Got Talent.
Andrew Heckman, 18, of Fort Recovery will dance with his sister Lisa Heckman, 29, of Maria Stein, Ohio. Andrew also plays piano and has played roles in several musicals in area theatre groups and Lisa is an accomplished pianist and piano teacher.
In Farm World
Both Fort Recovery and Jay County FFA teams were mentioned in the January issue of Farm World in the Spotlight on Youth column.
Fort Recovery Food Science team members were named that competed in the district contest.
Jay County FFA and Monsanto have partnered to build an outdoor agronomy lab.
Iwo Jima service
The Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis will have an Iwo Jima Memorial Service on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. to mark the 66th anniversary of the epic battle during World War II that cost the United States 4,590 lives.
Detachment 1, Communication Company, United States Marine Corps from Peru, Indiana, will pay tribute to all that served in the battle.
If any survivor of the battle would like their name on the program, they may contact staff sergeant Justin Frank at [email protected] or phone (765) 688-4421. Leave name, rank, phone number, address and number of guests attending.
Scholarships
The Indiana Sheriff’s Association is offering college scholarships to high school seniors or college students who want to pursue a career in criminal justice studies or law enforcement.
To qualify for a scholarship students must be an Indiana resident, a current member of the association or a dependent child or grandchild of a current member, attend an Indiana college or university or an Indiana high school, major in a law enforcement field and be enrolled as a full-time student.
Applications are available from high school counselors, the sheriff’s office on 224 W. Water St. in Portland or by requesting a form in writing from the Indiana Sheriff’s Association, 7215 E. 21st St., Suite E, Indianapolis, IN 46219.
Applications must be received at the above address by April 1.
Spelling Bee
Mercer County Spelling Bee will be held Monday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. at Wright State University Lake Campus in the James F. Dicke Hall. Students from Fort Recovery, Coldwater, Marion, Parkway and St. Henry will participate.
Dean’s list
Sarah Horn made the fall dean’s list at Ball State University. She is a freshman studying manufacturing engineering. She is the daughter of Janet Horn, Pennville.
Julie Alig, Portland, made the dean’s list for the fall semester at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.[[In-content Ad]]
