In the end the East Jay baseball team’s greatest competition came from its closest rival.

West Jay pushed East Jay in the semifinal round of tournament action Saturday at Wapahani High School in Selma, but was not quite able to derail the perfect season. East Jay survived for a 7-3 win over West Jay, then trampled Muncie Central 10-4 in the championship game to finish undefeated.

The title team also earned another honor as Justin Mann won the East Central Indiana Junior High School Baseball Sportsmanship Award.

East Jay (26-0) and West Jay traded the lead through the first four-and-a-half innings. Then the East Jay offense came alive as it trailed 3-2.

Colton Lombardo singled and stole second base to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Then came three consecutive run-scoring hits, starting with an RBI single from lead-off hitter Justin Mann.

Kyle Simmons followed with an RBI triple, and Billy Wellman brought him to the plate with an RBI single. Wellman would also come in to score, and Phillip Powell took a walk to set up Lombardo again.

Lombardo delivered his second hit of the inning to bring Powell around to score and complete the five-run rally.

West Jay could not put any runs on the board in the sixth and seventh as East Jay advanced to the championship game.

Michael Jobe earned the win as he struck out 11. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in seven innings.

Jobe led the offense with a pair of hits, including a solo home run which tied the game in the fourth inning. He also had a double.

Muncie Central simply could not do anything to stop East Jay in the tournament finale.

Led by a three-hit effort from Powell, East Jay scored three times in the first inning and four in the third en route to a 9-0 lead. Muncie Central managed three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to cut its deficit to five runs, but never got closer.

Powell ripped a pair of doubles and a single in the winning effort. Jobe and Wellman each had triples, and Mann and Simmons also had one hit apiece.

Billy Wellman picked up the win, allowing three runs on two hits in five innings. He struck out six batters.

Mann struck out the side in each of the final two innings to preserve the win. He allowed one run on one hit.

East Jay will play Wallen in a state tournament in Decatur Saturday at noon.[[In-content Ad]]
