East Jay girls first at Selma (09/18/06)

SELMA - East Jay and Driver each had a pack of three runners finish in the top 10 Saturday. The Chiefs were just faster.
Leah Wellman, Katie Simmons and Katie Butcher finished second, third and fourth respectively to lead the East Jay Middle School girls cross country team to the championship at the Selma Invitational Friday. Winchester Driver, which took fifth, sixth and seventh individually, was second with 46 points and Delta was third with 89.
West Jay's girls team placed fourth with 146, edging Yorktown by three points in the eight-team event.
The Chiefs' seventh grade boys team held off host Selma (76) for a runner-up finish with 75 points. Delta won easily as it swept the top five sports for a score of 15, and West Jay was last in the nine-team field with 237.
East Jay's eighth grade boys were sixth out of seven with 145. Driver won with 58, and Selma was second with 60.
The top three Chief girls locked up the title with Wellman placing second in 12-minutes, 33 seconds, and Simmons third in 12:41. Butcher was fourth with a time of 12:50, seven seconds faster than the lead runner from Driver.
Annie Jetmore gave West Jay a runner in the top 10, placing 10th at 13:36.
Laura Bowen added a 15th-place effort for East Jay in 13:44, and Diedre Chenoweth took 17th in 13:50.
Bradley Leuthold and Garrett Krieg had matching top efforts in the boys races. Leuthold paced the East Jay seventh graders in seventh at 11:58, and Krieg was seventh for the eighth grade team in 12:03.
West Jay's top runner in the seventh grade boys race was Chance Fuller, who took 15th in 12:58.
Austin Bentz finished 10th behind Leuthold in 12:28. Trailing him were Seth Ainsworth (16th - 13:04), Aaron Loy (20th - 13:19) and Jordan McBride (22nd - 13:32).
Following Jetmore for the West Jay girls were Liz Lennartz (28th - 14:12), Meagan J. Price (31st - 14:19), Macy Gerber (38th - 15:01) and Carly Weaver (39th - 15:04).
Krieg was trailed by Jacob Heitkamp (18th - 12:52), Dylan Swingley (39th - 13:58), Blake LeMaster (40th - 14:00) and Joe Imel (14:06) for East Jay in the eighth grade boys race.
Behind Fuller for the West Jay boys in the seventh grade race were Dyllan Friddle (43rd - 14:49), Zach Johnson (54th - 16:01), Kyle Murdock (56th - 16:09) and Lee Mock (69th - 18:34).
LeAnn Horn was the top Jay County runner in the co-ed reserve race, placing third in 14:10.[[In-content Ad]]
