East Jay girls remain perfect (01/30/06)

Boomer Basketball tournament

With two games to play, the East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team is still perfect.

The Chiefs pushed their record to 14-0 Saturday as they won the Boomer Basketball Invitational hosted by the Jay Community Center. They clobbered both opponents, topping Muncie Northside 32-7 and Richmond Dennis 37-13.

Also winning titles were the East Jay eighth grade boys and sixth grade girls teams.

East Jay’s eighth grade girls used dominating defense in its wins while Lindsey Wellman powered the offense.

The Chiefs (14-0) allowed just one point against them in the first quarter of each game. Northside also went scoreless in the second quarter, and scored just one point in the third.

Wellman reached double figures in both games, scoring 19 in the championship and 14 in the semifinal. Pazia Speed had eight points against Northside, and Jaime Klinger scored seven versus Dennis.

The East Jay eighth grade boys evened the score with West Jay, which won the East Jay Invitational title earlier this year. The Chiefs squeaked by Muncie Northside 32-30 in their opening game, then knocked off the Eagles 47-36 in the championship.

Brad Horn paced East Jay (11-5) with 18 points in the championship game and 15 in the semifinal. Eric Homan had 15 and 10 points respectively.

East Jay’s sixth graders still haven’t allowed a team to reach double digits this year as they earned wins of 25-7 over Muncie Northside and 32-9 over Muncie Wilson to take their title. They are now 6-0 on the season.

Danielle Wellman scored 15 points in the tournament, and Mariah Hornaday had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Mollie May added nine points, Megan May and Whitney Hapner each had five rebounds and Kassie Hemmelgarn notched four assists.

The East Jay seventh grade boys and girls teams each finished in third place. The boys dropped their opener 34-23 to Richmond Dennis before beating West Jay 35-23, and the girls fell 31-15 to Muncie Northside and then defeated West Jay 34-7.

Drew Houck and Cara Garringer took scoring honors for their teams in both games. Houck finished the tournament with 20 points, and Garringer scored 15.[[In-content Ad]]
