East Jay nears perfection (06/30/04)

It needs one more win.
The East Jay baseball team has pulled within one win of a perfect regular season thanks to Monday’s 36-3, four-inning drubbing of Union City. East Jay also swept a double-header against Muncie Central Saturday, 18-3 and 17-7.
Michael Jobe had an outstanding day as he hit for the cycle to lead the victory over Union City. Billy Wellman followed with three doubles and two singles, and Phillip Powell had three hits.
Trey Dunn picked up the win for East Jay (21-0), striking out four batters and allowing three runs on three hits in three innings. Billy Wellman struck out two in one scoreless inning of relief.
Jobe shut down Muncie Central for the victory in the second game of the double-header. He struck out 10 batters and allowed just one run in four innings.
He also had a triple.
Wellman finished with three hits, including two doubles, and Lance VanSkyock also had three hits. Colton Lombardo added a pair of doubles.
In the opener against Muncie Central Justin Mann paced the offense with four hits. Nate Wood had three hits, and Wellman added a pair.
Powell tossed six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Lombardo posted one strikeout in one scoreless inning of relief.
